boat wont rev past 3k rpm
« on: June 19, 2011, 18:38:58 pm »
Hi, i was wondering if you guys had run in to this problem before. My boat doesn't want to rev past 3k rpm. I don't have a check engine light and boat starts up fine. I guess i'll start doing a routine maintenance check and see if i find anything.

Thanks,
Hoang

sounds like your boat is in "limp in mode". most likely a etcs problem. "throttle body failure" usually tends to be a throttle lever sensor, but if any sensor in the etcs goes out it will default into limp in mode. there is a couple test procedures in the maintenance section or do some forum searches. most of the time it wont set a check engine light. you can replace individual sensors or the whole throttle body. check to see if the throttle plate works in relationship to the throttle handle. if it only works the last 30% it is a etcs problem.

Do a search on 'limp mode' and you'll glean some valuable information (hot at times).

You'll also pick up on acronyms like:
ETCS (electronic throttle control system)
MAF (mass-air flow - sensor)
OBD-I OBD-1.5 OBD-II (on-board diagnostics series 1, 1.5, 2)
MMDC (Instrumentation Computer - Multiple Module Data Computer by Medallion; a gauge manufacturing company)

After you spend considerable time on the web site and google you can test for your 'Master Problem Solver' certification and let me know what all this crap really means!   ;D

Put in a set of spark plugs. Does the engine go to 1200 rpm after a few minutes? Is the engine fuel pumpS working? See all post to check.

X2 on the sparkplugs first. That is the most common issue.

I'm seeing a similar issue with my 2001 x22.
I changed the spark plugs and it runs a lot better.  However, I can't get RPMs over 2200.  I think they use to approach 4000 before.

I've also sprayed Mass Airflow Cleaner on the plastic intake.
I changed the fuel filter.

When I attempt to accelerate my "check engine" light and alarm sound around 1600 RPM.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I should investigate next?

Thank you. (And big thanks to Capt Rick)

So advise after removing the black plastic intake. Try to move the throttle plate by hand. If it is stuck you will remove it and try to free it up!

Or send  it to me for possible rebuilding.

Thanks Capt. Rick.  I removed the black platic intake. The throttle plate moves freely with my fingers.
