Hot water coming up underneath the floor under the dash!
« on: July 19, 2023, 18:57:27 pm »
I’ve been a happy owner of a 2000 X22 for three years. After dewinterizing it and getting out on the lake for the first time last month I’ve been taking on a lot of water and have to bilge out about 15 to 20 gallons per four hour period.  It’s concerning. I’m

The weird thing is is that there is hot water coming up underneath the front corner below the dashboard underneath the carpet. It is very hot, even uncomfortable for my feet. It begins immediately once the engine is running, and we are moving.

I’ve taken apart the coverings , but all of it is hidden. So I can’t tell what the heck is going on. Any ideas? It must be something coming from the engine to get that hot but I don’t know why it would be underneath my feet just below the cupholder on the driver side of the boat.

Any suggestions or has anyone dealt with this before? I’m at a loss.

Sounds like a leaking heater core. Very common after winterization.

You have several options:
1) ($) If you don't need the heater, block off the inlet/outlets at the engine or install a short loop hose between the two.

2) ($$) I got a new, improved core copper tube core from Zoro a couple years ago that fit the old heater box almost perfectly - just needed one slight modification. That costs around $100.

Unfortunately, it looks like Zoro is out of stock or no longer carries it. This might be the same one, but you would need to verify:

3) ($$$) Replace the whole unit with a new, improved Heatercraft unit for around $350.

Indeed, it is the coils that broke during the extreme cold we had here in Idaho last year. I keep it in my shop which is not heated. Think -25° for a week.

So I have removed it and verify that it is leaking. seems like I’m just going to loop it off and then consider if I want to replace it. I next to never use it only when I get caught in a storm and the kids are huddled under there. Which is only happened once or twice.

I’m going to use some copper fittings. And then wrap it with insulation and tie it off somewhere. Any objections to that methodology?

Thanks for your help all.

At Rick, I think I’m ready to pull the trigger on the refurbished MCCD unit.
