Hull design on Toyota Boats - Urgent!
« on: November 13, 2003, 16:05:43 pm »
I'm considering buying a 2000 Epic 22 for wakeboarding.

Toyota designed 5 boats: Epic 21, Epic 22, Epic S22, Epic X22 and SX-22 (2001 only).

I heard that 3 of the above hulls are ski hulls and the other 2 are deeper wakeboarding hulls. Does anyone know which is which?

Is the Epic 22 hull the same as a Epic SX-22 hull?

Some one please clarify!

Also, does anyone have direct experience using the Epic 22 for wakeboarding? Do you weight it down with fatsacs?

All of the open bow Toyota boats make good wakeboarding wakes. They are heavy boats with a flat transom, put some weight in them and the wake is as big as anything out there besides the new Xstar and that butt ugly Regal Session. The Vdrives have a deeper hull design but the D drives handle more weight better due to slightly more power (no Vdrive trans) I have an Epic 22 with tower, it can take 2k of weight without a problem. More than that and it is a bit low on power. It is a super reliable, well built boat. Try searching the posts, I have posted pictures of my wake with just a Fat Seat, maybe three people in the boat. The wake is more rampy than a Nautique, I like it because it boots me up and across, not just up. I like a rampy wake.

The SX and S22 are open bow v-drive boats.  The 21, 22 and X22 are the direct drive boats.  The x designates the boats that were designed with built in ballast tanks and factory installed wakeboarding towers.

There are a bunch of people that frequent this site with the various models.  From what I've read, the SX is probably the best out of the box wakeboarding boat Toyota made, followed by the S22(with fat sacks and your own tower), then the X22, then the epic 22.  Haven't heard of anyone using the the Epic 21 for wakeboarding, although I'm sure you could.  However, its main purpose was tournament class water skiing.  The X22 gets good marks for its flexibility with tournament class skiing wakes at skiing speeds, and great wakeboarding wakes with ballast full at boarding speeds.

My brother and I have an Epic 22 with no fat sacks no tower, and have used it to ski and board, and it works well for us doing either, depending on how fast you go and how many people you have in the boat.  The engine itself is extremely smooth and quiet, and yet you get that sweet V8 growl out the back.  They are sweet boats IMHO.  You can get a great deal on one if you shop around.  Look at www.boattraderonline.com, and enter 'Toyota' under make, then do a search....  Good luck one of the members of this site has his boat listed there (Epic 22), and it is a grrreat deal.  Attached is a picture of the SX, the best of the Toyotas for wakeboarding.

Dug through the posts, here's my wake with a partially full Fat Seat, no bow sack, three people.

Blue,

Seems to me that your biggest question is really no different with Toyotas than with Malibus or MCs: do you want a V-drive or a D-drive?

My choice was the v-drive (S22 to be specific). I chose it cuz of the SUPER open seating and feeling. Feels really roomy, and that's important with a wife, two kids, and always at least a third adult, usually a pair. Bow riding is cool, but I didn't want it to be mandatory.

However, the d-drives are sweet, and less of a compromise than v-drives. Doesn't matter if you're a skier or a boarder, d-drives are better performers. Most of that is just plain old better balance.

Many will say that v-drives are better boarding boats, but I beg to differ. A d-drive starts with a wake handicap, but there is more room to play with ballast - the fat seat is a great example. Side sacks next to the d-drive's engine are another. Fat Lounge is another.

With the V-drive, you start with a little too much weight in back and go from there. No major difference, but in all honesty, if I were building a boarding boat without regard for creature comfort, I'd do d-drive.

I understand that SX boats have required ballast rework (like most other brands). As for me, I'm enjoying starting from scratch with the S22's ballast.

The bigger thing to remember than the model lineup (of which you can recite better than me ;-) is that there are three hulls - the 21, and then the 22 d- and v-drive. Three distinctly different hulls.

The Toyota's a great boat. I wouldn't have any other brand, but I also would be hesitant to recommend one to any of my friends. A regular guy would be better off with a newer Moomba than a bitchen Toyota. I love mine, and it'll be roaming the SoCal lakes for the next twenty years.

In twenty years, the thing'll still be phat.
