Trailer hitch for a 2000 4Runner
« on: June 21, 2008, 15:12:22 pm »
Just got a 2000 4Runner V6 to tow my 1999 Epic 22 to and from the lake (short distance; the ramp is only 3.5 miles away).

Wondering what kind of hitch to get. I was thinking getting a 1-inch spoon (Class 3) and flipping it upside down.

Does this sound about right? I know the 4Runners squat quite a bit in the back when towing.

Thanks!

I put airshocks on my 2002 4-Runner.  Should be similar to your suspension.  I can't remember off-hand what the airshock numbers were, but I can find out for you if you are interested. Easy to install, basically just replaces the two rear shocks on the truck.  They were from CarQuest and can handle 200PSI I believe.  I has helped out considerably with the squat from the weight.  Oh..and I use the stock reciever with a drop hitch (~6" I think?).

Thanks for the advice, flyn2001. I would like to find out more about the particular airshocks you have.

Just remember flyn's 6" drop is due to his 3" lift.  Meaning his 6" is really only 3".  Story of his life  :D  :D  :D

larryscribe,

http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/4Runner/tech/rear_air_shocks/

This was the link that started me on my original journey to get airshocks on the "Runner".  I didn't do anything other than order the "Carquest SHK 50897".  It seemed that none of the Carquests near me had them in stock, so they had to order from their warehouse somewhere.  I put them on in about 2 hrs.  Just replaced my old shocks.  If I remember correctly, the top was the tricky part on each (not much room to move your hands around).  Don't get discouraged if you cannot find them on line, I couldn't either.  They can handle roughly 200psi, I usually pressure up to 160.

Ouch K-town!! True though!! haha

I had a 99 4 runner V6.  It looked like the boat going down the road with the hood at an upward angle.  It also had 3" of lift so hope that other post doesn't apply to me :)  Just give it a try you can easily flip the hitch and if you can get the boat on you are good to go and just understand this is what those 4rnr's do unless you replace the shocks/suspension.

I've got two inches of lift and it tows it fine. Not a whole lot of sag, either. Struggles a little going up ramps and hills, but that's to be expected. I just baby it and take it slow.

Thanks for the help!
