Depth Finder Part???
« on: May 30, 2009, 05:22:15 am »
I was under the dash of my X22 running a dedicated ground for the dash.  I noticed a Lowrence box, but I did not think I had a depth finder. I followed the wire to the back of the boat and then into the engine compartment, where it terminated into what for lack of a better word would be a plastic "tower."  It does not appear to penetrate the hull, but does appear something else would "snap" onto this tower.  Is there a part I need or is this all there should be and mine just doesn't work?

Did some more digging, is the point where the wire hits the hull the transducer?  If i replace this with the PD-W part #90-41 from lei-extras.com is there a chance i will have a depth finder?

if you have the multi gauge you have a depth finder.  do you have a owners manual?  When you toggle through the multi gauge functions you should get to the "depth" section select that and if it is working it will show you how deep the water is.  Yes you do have the depthfinder hardware and yes you have found the transducer.  If all is in working order you do have a depth finder!

My boat had the same symptoms as yours. There is a good chance there is nothing wrong with the hardware (electronics). It may just be where the transducer is located. And you may have success just relocating the transducer to another spot. Read this earlier post I did on the subject.

Do you hear a ticking sound coming from the transducer?

breakawaydaze, i do not have the owners manual for the multi gauge, but i did see it on the site here, so i will go and print it off.  cool, happy i have the depth finder i never knew i had... duh!

WNF,
thanks for the link, i will do some investigating.  as far as the ticking, i didn't have the power on, so i didn't hear a ticking. i wasn't trying to work on the depth finder at the time, but this seems like my next little project!

If the depth finder transducer (puck looking thing with a wire in the top) is seated correctly in the hole in the liner, it is probable that you will not hear the ticking.

I just fixed the problem on my SX with my depth finder by cleaning the hull and glueing the puck down. There was a cutout in the liner and a pad made out of the old grey glue they used. There was silicon sealer around the puck to "seal" the liner but it was full of water. I let it dry out over the winter then glued the puck down with liquid nails clear silicon adhesive for projects.
I sealed the liner as well with copious amounts of the stuff.

My depth finder reads well at speed as well as stopped. It doesn't read well off plane and sometimes will flash when running at towing speeds but for the most part it works great. I'm so happy to have it working for the first time (for me;) on this boat.

Capt Rick,

I ordered it from LEI from a link that was posted somewhere.  I should have ordered it from you but it was so easy to click on the link right then.  Thanks for checking.  I did order a "Toyota Marine Sports" logo for the back of the boat on the sides but I only got 1 and I ordered 2 I'm pretty sure.  If I only ordered 1, I will gladly pay for another one but I need 2.  Also, can I order just the "skins" for my drivers seat and the back 2 corner top pieces?  I looked through the parts list and saw a replacement seat but not the upholstery skins.. If so, please let me know. thanks!

I have been trying to get to work on the depth finder to see if i can get it to work.  However, I have had a minor setback.  Went to power up (electrical) the boat and no power.  After a little investigating I think my battery disconnect switch decided to die.  I have ordered a new one and someday I may actually have the X22 back in the water  ;D

my Epic came with the puck glued to the hull, but the wires bundled up and twist tied out of the way above the puck.  From the message center instal guide pdf it looks like there is an module between the message center and the puck.  Either I don't have that module or I can't find it!?  Where would it be installed and if I don't have one where can I get it?  thanks

On my boat there was a whole lot of wire on the puck.  I think it come from the factory with a 20ft wire and it actually only needed about 6ft.  The box is up under the dash, it says "lowrance" on it.  It hooks up to another box before the wires go to the display.  You will more than probably need to take the footrest off, my lowrance box was behind there.

To get an idea of what they look like, these Lowrance modules are out of my 2000 Mellinum X22; see pic.
