Amp is toast i think. Should i go marine?
« on: August 05, 2009, 07:04:54 am »
Yeah, my 800 watt amp got wet in the storage locker when coming back to the dock due to a bad storm. The 40 amp fuse was blown, so i tried a few more with the same result. Noticed water spots on the unit as well as on the terminals, so i'd imagine it's gone.

What would you recomend i do?

Should i go with a marine one, or put one in a different spot? I don't know if i have a lot of other options on where to mount it, as it's a fairly good sized amp. I mounted it on the board at the front of the storage locker, on the front side and out of the way of life jackets.

Oh, btw....The sub is a JL 12" in a box in the ski locker, and i am ( or was ) happy with the sound quality. It thumped so good that the vinyl on the lid bounces up and down.

I have had a Rockford amp 500.2 (non marine) mounted upside down under the glove box for 6 years now without a hickup.  I've went through 2 kenwood marine decks the first two years I had the boat then switched to a sony non-marine deck and it has lasted 4 years.  IMO skip the extra price of the marine stuff

I imagine you used bolts to mount it and not screws? Do you put your wet life jackets in there, or do you air dry them first? There's sure was a lot of moisture in there when i pulled the amp out. But like i said, it was mounted on the floor little wall in the front of the cabinet.

I've got a non marine pioneer deck that's been great for 2 years now. But i've got to mount the amp somewhere else i guess.
I think i only paid like $100 or so for the amp.

Anybody else want to comment?

my jackets and other wet stuff goes in the trunk.  A Dri-Z-Air goes in the compartement when the boat is at home. and yes 1/4" bolts

From now on, all our wet stuff is going in the trunk. Even the anchor ropes. I will probably take a couple front seat cushions out when done boating for the day, and open the locker door. We usually leave our life jackets hanging on the bimini rods until they dry, so hopefully we'll be alright.
Yeah, i was right. I only paid $100 for the amp when we bought 2, and he gave me the same deal this time.

Where do you get the dri-Z-air you're talking about?

I went and got some flushmount bolts with insinked washers for the inside of the jockey box, and used lock nuts & a washer underneath. I couldn't use 1/4" bolts on mine, had to go with something smaller; like a #10 bolt.

Worked out pretty sweet. I think it will be better getting it up off the floor, and away from the carpet.

Thank's a lot for the tips toyota god, i really appreciate it.

I'd go with big and cheap and non-marine. I have had great luck with Planet Audio el cheapo amps that are rated for gobs of power. For instance, I have a 1200watt into 1 ohm Planet audio mono class D sub amp driving two JL W6subs in parallel @ 1.5 ohms. They pound and are all I'll ever need. I've never had the amp overheat or even get warm. It was a refurb and I paid 159$ two seasons ago;)

I use a 300watt RMS SQ "boutique" amp made by Zed Audio for Planet Audio for my 4 x 6x9 tower box, I bought several of these amps on Ebay for cheap, some were working and some weren't. I fixed some, blew some up, and still have a couple as spares or as "kids car" parts. It was American made stuff, very complex and well designed, but with simple flaws like bad fuseholders and RCA jacks that don't stand up to "real" monster style modern connectors.

Their new stuff is great and cheap as dirt. It is all cute and cuddly and third worldy inside. Big beefy wires and (eastern bloc) military looking parts and nice heat sinks. I had a five channel Planet Audio Zeus amp that did sub and boat speakers in my Epic 22. It did well and is still working as far as I know (hey greg!)

My advice, go cheap and mount it up high. Pad the doorway of the storage compartment well, it is a MOFO on your back working in there.

i've heard good things about palnet audio on other forums as well.  Dri-z air can be purchased at any outdoor place, I even got refills at Fred Meyer.  I use the black plastic globe with the catch reservoir underneath.  they work great and the refills are cheap but gawd don't spill the water that collects  :P
