mildew on seats
« on: October 27, 2009, 23:14:52 pm »
With all the rain we've gotten this fall, I noticed that my seats have a thin layer of mildew on them. even the top of the engine compartment. Most of it wipes right off, but I even have some on the carpet! Anything outthere that gets it off easy? And, any tips for keeping moisture out?

I keep it covered up tight mostly, but after last trip to the lake, i did not seal it up good with the cover. It's outside, but under a deck porch out of direct weather. Normally, at the end of the year, i put a bucket of damp rid in the seating area...which probably would have prevented this.

Les, your post sent a chill down my spine! I don't know any answer besides just wash the crud then let the sun bleach it away. Someday I hope to have a boat garage so this should never ever happen.

Well, the good news is that it comes off very easy with some soapy water. I left the cover off for a few days and much of it disappeared. I think i'm in good shape and will give it a good washing this weekend.

Amen to that.  I'm so glad mine has been in dry storage during the tropical forest like weather we have been having this fall.

You should get a hold of a Hospital grade disinfectant with a pH of 4.5-5.5. Most have a Virucidal, Fungicidal, and Mildewstat incorporated in to the product. Your local Janitorial Supply should be able to help. Plus you should be using a product like this in your bathrooms. A concentrate product cost about .04-.05 cents per quart. We distribute a a product called Maxima by Brulin, quart size, makes 64 gallons for about 13.50 each. Try to stay away from a R.T.U. (Ready to use) you pay for water and packaging.  Now if I could get out on the lake with my E-22, life would be better!!!!!
Good Luck,
Curtis

Curtis, are you saying this stuff will remove mildew/mold or just prevent it?

My buddy owns a V-drive and puts cedar boards under his soft ballast on both side, to absorb the moisture. The cedar will absorb and naturally dry out by it self. When he stores it he places large boards of cedar in the boat while it is covered.

T.F.
Using a "hospital grade quat" will displace some of the existing mold or mildew that you may experience. It will kill anything that is currently growing. If a stain has already appeared it will be difficult to remove. At that point a "mild"..... abrasive like toothpaste may work on the upholstery. Clean your carpet with "Quat" preferably a type that the pH is neutral. "Stain" removal with bleach is a last resort. Bleach is corrosive and unstable. Unstable in the respect of potency.
I have seen what moisture does to a ill cared for Epic or any boat. Electrical connections seem to fail first, then it is a cascade. Lets keep her dry and happy.
Regards,
curtis

Thanks all for the replies. Thanks to a GREAT sunny weekend, I was able to clean the crap out of it out in the sun. It looks brand new except there is still a very small patch on the rear locker I was not able to get off with soapy water.I'll try the toothpaste on that, but feel sure more sun will axe it.
