Timing belt looks good to me
« on: April 05, 2010, 03:10:17 am »
Took the timing belt cover off today to give it a looksy; and it actually has no cracks and no signs of cracking at all.

I did notice on the inside ( closest to the engine ) that between the ribbed portion and the smooth, the cardboard looking material that's sandwiched between is starting to frey a little bit. It's only about a 8" section, but i did notice it.

I'm going to call my mechanic this week to see what he says.

What do you all think?

The boat is now 11 years old and 300 hours or so, but i'd like to know if i should just getter done now or what?

if you replace the timing belt, then change the engine water pump.

I would inspect the belt each year when it starts to crack or get black on housing then replace both. Remove the Plastice cover on starboard side of engine. Turn engine over in pulses and inspect complete belt...

I figured i'd replace the water pump at the same time, when i did it.

I have inspected it this year, and i saw NO cracks or any sign of wear. Didn't see anything black on the housing either. Of course, the black paint is chipping off the plastic cover. Had to be careful not to get debris down in there.
I didn't turn the motor over to check the whole belt, but do you think i ought to pull the cover off and check it again that way? I would assume i need to plug the wire harness back in before i start it? That plug's kind of a PITA to work with when you're pulling the cover off, and i would imagine if you're not careful you could rip off the ground wire in there. Of course i didn't remove all the hoses and stuff in front of it before i attempted it either.

Starboard side of engine is reffered to as the passenger side huh? I've had the boat for 11 years now, and i've never referred to it as the Starboard side. Go figure.
