Anyone know what this could be?
« on: April 26, 2010, 02:06:07 am »
I found a small water leak on the right side of the engine while it's running.  It looks like a small circular plate fastened to the engine with two screws opposite of each other.  Maybe a cover of some kind.  I tried posting pics but I receive an error message stating that "the upload folder is full".  I'll try posting it again later.

Toyota's version of a freeze plug, remove plate, make sure block is not cracked, clean both surface and plate , make sure both are clean and dry, buy Toyota "FIPG Black" at a dealership and reseal. The FIPG can breakdown after awhile, but also could be a sign of much larger problem. usually the first. Make sure there's not water in the oil. it will kind of look like choclate milk.

Did you not winterize during this past winter???? You froze and the cover plate warped and is leaking. Remove it and make it flat. Then use RTV 36 b to seal. Then run engine and see if you pushed out the heater hose under the minifold. Hopfully you did not do further damage>

I doubt the block is cracked.  I meticulously winterize the boat every fall.  I change the oil (always looks fine) and transmission fluid.  I also drain the water screen reservoir, block and exhaust manifolds.  I always allow the water to drain for ~30 minutes, just to be sure there isn't any residual.  Matter of fact, I even raise and lower the trailer tounge to be sure there isn't any water left in the block.  After everything is drained and fluids have been changed, I remove the spark plugs and fog the cylinders.  Finally, I turn the motor over for ~2 seconds (with the kill switch disconnected) to disperse the fogging oil.

Have I missed anything?  I really can't see how I could have freeze damage ???  I will try to post pics again below.

Mine has leaked the past two seasons and I finally pulled off the cover. No damage or warping -- the silicone is just 11 years old and needed to be cleaned off and the cover resealed. All is well. As Rick says, if the cover's edges are not flat, you may have some internal engine issues, but I could clearly see where the water finally broke through the silicone. The rest of it just crumbled off in my hand with light rubbing.

That makes me feel a little better.  I'm hoping the sealant is failing since it is most likely 10 years old.  We'll find out soon enough.  I plan on taking the cover off for inspection prior to the Memorial Day holiday.  I'll let you know what I find.
