De-Winterize tips requested
« on: February 27, 2011, 18:43:18 pm »
We are consistently hitting the low 80's here in central texas and I am anxious to get on the water.  Since this is my first "de-winterize" I was hoping some of you experienced guys could throw any tid-bits of knowledge you have aggregated to ensure a successful launch.
This is for a 2001 SX

Since u had it out in December, did you winterize?  If not, I would go ahead and put a new impeller in the water pump for sure.  If you don't know when the current one was put in, go ahead and put one in so you know.  I would go ahead and change all fluids as well. (oil and filter, transmission drain and fill, vdrive drain and fill)  I would go ahead and put in a new
fuel / water filter as well.  Go ahead and open and clean out the sea water strainer / filter as well.  A dirty flame arrestor will really hamper performance and its the easiest thing to clean.  Go ahead and change spark plugs as well.  Lots of discussion about densos and autolites,  I have used both and the autolites are significantly less expensive and perform just as well.  Once you round up all the tools and parts, I think it will take you about  3-5 hours the 1st time.  Pay special attention to notes in forum about transmission cap removal, lots of people get hung up there.  The vbelt is easy so go ahead and get a new one and put it on.  I usually pull up all of the floor boards and clean my bilge out.  This is a great time to check your bilge pump and any clogs in the bilge lines.  Remember all the fluids (oil, transmission, vdrive)  will come out easier if you run the boat and warm up the engine and transmission.  Don't forget the fake a lake and keep water spraying on the prop shaft bushing or you will fry the wadding.  Speaking of that be sure to check the prop shaft wadding adjustment for leaking, but don't overtighten.  After you do this once and go through it all, next year it won't take you an hour and a half!   Forum, did I miss anything?   Good luck, its a great boat!  Lots of info on forum, you are not alone!

I think you covered it well. If you tow don't forget about the trailer.

Is there any bleeding or priming required for the seawater cooling system?  I have noticed since I de-winterized that the engine is prone to run hot if i sit at idle or even run at low RPM.  If I push it up above 3500 RPM it quickly cools back down.  I didn't replace the impeller since it was only winterized for a month.  Any thoughts are appreciated.

I also pull the boat out of the water every evening.  Is there any advantage in closing the water inlet valve to keep it from draining down for these short periods?

Cheers,
Benjamin

your impeller is beginning to fail. replace it. mine did the same thing and it went out at "higher" rpms 5 miles from my campsite. the impeller has been the biggest issues Ive ever had with the boat. i change it every year after pulling it out of storage now. no more problems.

Thought I posted this already but it didn't show up.

I threw a new Johnson 812 in and she is running cool.  Even after extended idle periods it never got over 169 degrees.

Thanks to the forum for the indepth how-to and, once again, thanks a bunch wakejunky.  Toyota really should pay you.

Cheers,
Benjamin
