Is it possible for hull and deck to separate?
« on: August 05, 2015, 03:13:04 am »
Hi!
My 99 X22 had some aluminium clips installed many years ago as a retrofit to help prevent the deck and hull from separating. I use the boat for tubing a lot and as you know that creates a lot of pounding. I have noticed that my rub rail has some separation in the middle, port and starboard. That may be natural or it may be from the vessel twisting. Can such twisting create weakness in the glue that bonds the deck and hull?

I'm concerned because there is a lot more "flexing" noise these days and I see noticeable movement between the gap in the fixed windshield and the walk through window when shut.

Has anybody heard of the deck and hull separating?

Let me know.

Tx!

Well, this isn't good. You can actually see and feel movement and twisting within the hull?

Hi!
As I mentioned maybe it's normal to see some flexing but the buckling in the rub rail, even though minor, along with a noisy windshield, about 1/8 of an inch movement between the fixed windshield and the window has given me a reason to at least ask.

As I mentioned, Rick installed those clips for some reason even though they did not look very sturdy; i.e., aluminium with two 1/8 inch bolts. Maybe if I took off the rub rail I can inspect but that job looks like one to be let alone...will wait til season is over before I try.

I guess if it comes apart, you all will be hearing from me.

At risk of stating the obvious here....the windshield thing is normal. Underlying foam gasket migrates or deteriorates, making some up/down and side/side slop which can lead to mounting screw failure. Already replaced a few of my screws and need to get the whole windshield off to replace the foam gasket at some point.

Really really hard to believe the hull top/liner/hull bottom joint is coming apart.

Hi!
You may be right and that could take care of the noise problem potentially. Will look into the possibility of failed screws and keep an eye on the bond joint.
