Are you sure its the gauge?  Does it rattle at power up?

If it at least rattles, you can ship it to me, and I'll test it at no charge... I've got loads of experience with this flavor of speedometer.

WNF

Wondering if you have a fix for the speedo if it rattles and powers up? i may just have to send you mine.

it rattles, powers up, runs up to 50 (sitting still), stays there, comes down and then pick some random speed to get 'stuck' at...

on a side note, did you ever figure out your message center project?

Speedo:
Your speedo is doing exactly what did, and suffered with for several seasons. You have described the same symtoms, running upto to 50, then erratic. The problem is not the gauge. It is the pitot tube and analog circuity (sensor) interface on the MDC/MMDC computer. And my resolve was to abandon the pitot tubes completely, and go GPS. Here's my GPS answer.

http://www.nauticlaugic.com/nl2.html

Also this provides a means to extend the life of MDC/MMDC. For eventually thru freezing temperature and/or age, the pitot tube input sensors loose there water tight integrity. This will spray water on the computer's internals and damage it. This is a very common theme... you can verify this this forum and on other boat manufacturer's websites (that used the same vintage of Medallion Gauges). On my boat I have unplugged and capped the pitot hoses.

Display:
I wish there was good news on this front. The LCD replacements I've investigated I know will work directly with the Display electronics (hardware). However, the Medallion software engineers did something funky with the standard initialization code...which I have no control over; there's bit of nonstandard programming, throwing the new replacement into a tizzy.  ???
So I'm in a stall, but haven't forgotten about it. Each year I uncover more and more about these Medallion systems... maybe the answer to overcome this will present itself. For now, the best bet for a replacement is to get one from Capt Rick.

thanks WNF!!!

i saw the gps speedo fix before and that thought was awesome.  i think i am pretty much just going to get that and do what you did, enough screwin around and hopefully eliminate future problems.

well, i think its pretty cool you are still working on it.   too bad its not going as smoothly as you like, but that would be too easy!  i have been putting it off, just because, but the display is on my wishlist too!

thanks again!!!

Tantrum,

Plug the hoses:
I've only accomplished the temporary solution. Clip the bands holding the hoses onto the MMDC, and remove. Find small pieces of rod (brass, alum, SS) the same size diameter as the inside of the hose. Plug 'em, and use a cable tie to seal them in; see pic
I've been pondering the final solution which is to remove the Pitot Tubes, brackets, hoses, yet I hadn't done it because I lacked a plan to seal up the Transom holes. I had lunch and a great chat with SpokaneSX the other day. He recommended just using the local Fiberglass repair guy. He had some minor work done to his hull, and said they did such a great job, its practically invisible. So I think I got a plan now.   :)

Also I've attached a pic of where I placed the NL2's GPS Receiver. To avoid drilling holes, I mounted it on the vertical gunwale, at the aft end of the captains armrest. This allows the Receiver to be out in the open, semi protected, and most importantly, its cable is threaded up thru the seam between the side panels. see pic
Threaded back under the gunwale, the six foot cable easily reaches to the back of the dash.
