« on: July 13, 2011, 20:26:38 pm »
I have a 2001 S22 Vdrive, has anyoone set their boat up for wake surfing?  If so , would mind sharing what you did and what you wish you would have done.  I need to transistion to surfing as my body cant take the abuse any longer.  Thanks inadvance for your help!

If you search the forum, you'll find a number of entries on wake surfing.  Ballast, speed, swim platform and prop all contribute to your wake.  The normal scenario has you put more ballast on the side you'll be riding on - more in the aft (back) than in the bow (front).  Aft weight creates the height of the wake and steepness while bow weight flattens it and makes it longer.  On my 2002 SX, the starboard (drivers) side seems to create the cleanest wake for goofy riders (right foot forward on the board).

Here is my normal setup:

starboard internal ballast only 350 lbs (added a switch to isolate the tanks)
Fly High ballast in v-drive locker 700 lbs
Fly High ballast in bow walkway 400 lbs
Driver (more ballast than normal person;-)

Speed on Perfect Pass 10.3

I have a Acme 449 prop in Utah at 4,600 in elevation

Replaced my composite swim platform with a teak platform. Cut the corners on the teak platform to minimize wake interference

One more factor I forgot to mention.  Usually the depth of the lake has an impact.  Less than 14 feet can effect the shape of the wake.  We surf quite a bit on Utah Lake in depths of 8 to 12 feet so it still works but not as pristine.

like brad mentioned lake depth is an issue. For me it was critical, my home lake is between 4 and 10 feet deep. it averages about 8. wakesurfing unfortunately is NOT an option for me. yeah i know I'm jealous.........my knees are junk and i was hoping to start surfing but its just not happening. if depth isnt an issue i would address the swim step first. the factory step really cuts into the wave. i know some guys on here have raised it and some have gotten new steps. good luck

I just installed a teak platform on my SX that I have trimmed down (ends and corners) and raised 2 ".  I found the fibreglass platform really interfered with the wake by being both two wide and low.  The more ballast aft  to try to grow the wake the more the platform interfered  hoping this improves the wake.

I added 450 lbs bag in the front and a 750 lbs bag in rear.  The wake is a lot better now but the swim platform is the issue now...if i had my way I would removebut my wife likes it...I am going to look inot hinging it.  The lakes in Seattle are all very deep for the most part.

Thanks,
Tony

Tried wake surfing with additional weight this past
weekend on my SX

750 LBS Bow
350 LBS starboard internal ballast
600 lbs VDrive Locker
210 LBS Driver
1250  LBS passengers  on starboard side rear seat and swim deck

3160 lbs and the boat kicks out a pretty good wake
it really needs weight in the bow to firm up the wake

Off-topic: The low-riding teak is one of my favorite traits. We don't surf (have a beach for that :-) We had my wife out 8 months preggo and she was totally able to get in and out due to the just barely wet teak. Havasu's hot, so the teak is a real comfy place to hang out>
