New to Forum
« on: September 08, 2011, 18:49:19 pm »
Hi All. I am new to this forum and just wanted to say hi. I think I would like to get an Epic sx22 for use as an all around boat. It would mainly be used for tubing and cruising although I would also like to slalom behind it. I usually ski between 30-33mph. Is the wake going to be too big for me to have an enjoyable ski? I currently own a 17' Campion with a 115hp Yamaha and at skiing speeds the wake is very small. I live in British Columbia, Canada and boat on Christina Lake (which happens to be the warmest tree-lined lake in North America). Anyway, that's it for now.

Cheers

Dane,

Welcome to the forum. I live in Kelowna and have an X-22. We use it for wakeboarding and skiing and find it's quite a good compromise. There's a few Epic owners in BC including one with an SX. Perhaps they can let you know what they think of theirs.

Welcome! I also live in kelowna and have an SX22. I think an SX would be a great choice for Christina Lake.  One difference between the S22 and SX22 is the SX22 features a lower ratio transmission. This results in more pulling power, but also causes you to have a lower top speed (who cares), and run at a higher RPM at cruising speed (burns more fuel). This only really comes in to play when travelling long distances on larger lakes. I wouldn't worry about it at all on Christina though. We've taken my SX on a few long trips up OK lake and it still averages much better fuel economy than friends with comparable Mastercrafts and Malibus.

As for the wakes:
Wakeboarding - It's excellent. Fill up the stock ballast and have a couple people in the boat and its great. Fill up the ballast and load the boat with 8 or 9 people and the wake is massive.

Surfing - Still working on dialing the surf wake in, but I've found if you weight it properly you can get a pretty decent wave. As others on the forum have mentioned, the swimdeck does start to get in the way of the wave... I don't really want to reduce the size of the deck though, so I'll live with it.

Slalom - To be honest I haven't skied behind it yet. Now that September is here and the tourists have gone home we're finally getting some calm days with no boat roll. The wake appears to be pretty decent as far as v-drives go at slalom speeds though., but not as good as a dedicated direct drive ski boat.

You probably won't find an SX in Canada, so you will probably have to buy one in the USA like I did. If you have any questions about the import process, feel free to send me a PM. I've got a really good shipping contact as well if you need it.
