Block Drain Pulled Today
« on: August 17, 2011, 07:24:26 am »
I couldn't get the plug to seat and stop the water this year. The picture explains why. Thanks to Wet-N-Frugal, I was able to remove it without taking my exhaust manifold off first. He made a socket with a cut out for the drain tube.

New one should be here tomorrow. It's great to have a resource for parts. Thanks Capt Rick.

I am thinking about cutting the drain tube shorter since it hit the mount for the fuel pumps and bent the old one when I removed it.  Has anyone had the same issue?

Dang, that looks pretty close to what mine looks like.  Think Im going to have to replace one (or both) of them in the spring, tired of having to really crank on the plugs.

Can you post up a picture of what your modified socket looks like? I'm sure that I'll end up changing this part out at some point. I'm amazed you were able to get it out without having to remove the manifold. Even loosening the bolt to drain the block when winterizing is nearly impossible!

I changed mine out last summer after dealing with them every winter which was a pain.  Best thing I've done to make it alot easier is every time I get out off the lake (after the weekend) I put a quick shot of aviation grade WD40 on them to keep them from rusting over.   I forget the name of the stuff but keeps them looking NEW and working flawlessly...

These drain plugs are messed up on my SX as well,  I resorted to putting plugs on the drain tubes to stop them from leaking.  Did the replacements come complete with the brass plug as well ?  Are both sides avialable ?  Maybe Capt Rick can put these on sale at month end

I pulled the brass plugs out and cleaned them up with a wire brush so they look like new. They are a lot easier to open and close now and they seat tightly without any drips.

Both plugs are available from Capt. Rick.

I have to give all the credit to Wet-N-Frugal. He loaned me the modified sockets which made it possible to change the plugs without removing the exhaust manifolds. It still wasn't easy and required 2 elbow corner socket thingys and 2 extensions. And in the words of Wet-N-Frugal "some practice standing on your head."

The plug assemblies do come with the brass portion as well.
