Thanks for the PM, SLED. Got me thinking.
Here is the tranny label for the S22:
http://www.epicmarine.com/epicphotos/displayimage.php?album=13&pos=11Says SAE 30. Owner's Manual says MobilGear 626. I always used Mobil 1 75W-90 gear oil. Others have recommended 30W engine oil. Did a little research on the subject. Highlights here. I'm sure there are many important things going into any oil selction, but most importantly is viscosity cold and hot.
Mobilgear 626 gear oil: Viscosity at 40C – 70 cST; Viscosity at 100C 11 cST
Mobil 1 75W-90 gear oil: Viscosity at 40C – 99 cST; Viscosity at 100C 15 cST
Mobil 1 5W-30 engine oil: Viscosity at 40C – 62 cST; Viscosity at 100C 11 cST
Generic 30W engine oil: Viscosity at 40C – 100 cST; Viscosity at 100C 11 cST
Check out Bob Is the Oil Guy's site, especially this chart.
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/viscosity-charts/ Note that engine oils are usually discussed with respect to different operating temperatures than gear oils, but they are provided at these temps on respective product sheets.
All in all, I'd say the M1 5W-30 engine oil is closer to MobilGear 626 than either Mobil 1 Gear Oil or standard 30W engine oil.
What do you guys think? Bob says most wear happens when cold, and thinner cold is definitely better. All four are 'thick enough' at temp.
