Shaft packing for 1 1/8" driveshafts
« on: July 24, 2012, 07:52:10 am »
Forgive if I've posted the question before or if it's answered elsewhere...

The shaft packing instructions posted here (think I got them from Jeff Dorge, but it may have been Capt Rick) describe 5/16" packing. but doesn't differentiate between 1" driveshafts and 1 1/8" shafts like us S22/SX guys have.

I pulled my packing and bought 5/16" from West Marine. I just don't see how the 5/16" can fit without a press of some sort. Tried for quite some time with no joy. Got me thinking that maybe the instructions were appropriate for smaller 1" shafts and that we v-drivers need something smaller. I have 1/4" packing ready to go, but have wanted to ask the pros out there what they think?

Thanks!

I believe you are correct. Under the parts section, reference Boat, figure #17, Packing for 1" shaft is 5/16 and Packing for 1-1/8" shaft is 1/4".

Confirmed...the 1/4" packing is appropriate for 1 1/8" shafts. Went in lickety split and worked great in the water. We need to update the ppt in the maintenance section....
