Small Chip in Gel Coat
« on: July 09, 2012, 19:11:18 pm »
I had a bit of an incident on the water yesterday and got a couple of small chips in the gel coat on my Epic 21. Does anyone know what the best way is to repair the gel coat? Should I just buy a kit or have it professional done?

I found this web site on another boating forum while researching the subject.

if you have never done it before i would leave it to a professional. matching gel coat on an older boat is very difficult. is the damage bad? it may not be worth the trouble. it did some gel coat repair several years ago, bought "matched gel coat" from the original manufacturer and my sun fade was much worse than i realized. i ended up color sanding and polishing the whole boat. it looked like new but it was a LOT of work.

Thanks for the advice. The chips are pretty small -- 3 chips less than an inch each. My concern is that it is on a lip so it might be hard to smooth out.

try posting a pic. set a coin next to it so we can get a rough idea the size. is it down to the fiberglass?
