Toyota Epic Engine Diagnostic Tool Group Buy
« on: July 29, 2012, 06:02:20 am »
First the software is dealer level minus reprogramming. There is a generic OBD2 feature for all other vehicles. Info and data on generic is limited due to the nature of it. It is not dealer level, but is still very useful. Here is a partial list of features

Vehicle connection wizard- auto populates vehicle info for you
View and erase current, pending, and history codes
View freeze frame data from when the code set
View and reset Monitors and readiness tests
Perform active tests

LIVE DATA- this is awesome i use it everyday.
Multiple preset engine parameter lists in live data, you can even make custom lists.
Graphing of live data- you can customize this too
Access to all ECM's - body, electrical, chassis, engine, etc
many more features i could go on and on.
It is extremely user friendly. i can also help directly on the forum.

OK on to the hardware, its a USB cable with a standard OBD2 connector that will plug in to a laptop or PC that you supply. It has a chip in it that makes all this work and its called a Vehicle Interface Module. VIM for short. You will be choosing between a Basic and Premium VIM.

                                                   BASIC VIM $200 plus shipping
This VIM will run on Windows XP, Windows Vista 32 bit, Windows 7 32 bit. It will ONLY work on 64 bit machines if you run it on a "XP Virtual Machine".

                                                    PREMIUM VIM $650 plus shipping
This VIM will work on 32 bit and 64 bit right out of the box

Both come with a one year warranty. They do not cover shipping costs. The VIM will not be covered under warranty if it is damaged (fried) due to improper installations.

I was planning on using USPS Priority mail boxes. They run about $7. If you are not in the U.S.A. you will need to check shipping rates from 93268 zipcode and provide me with shipping instructions and additional fees.

You will receive your VIM cable and a CD including the VIM driver, diagnostic software and install instructions. I can also print out instructions if you would like them on paper. Please leave me a note in Paypal or PM me your name, mailing and shipping address (if different), VIM choice, and if you want printed instructions. Please include your forum name also.

I'm very excited to finally have this available to us and I'm sure you will be more than pleased with its capabilities. If you have any questions please ask or PM me.

Thanks

Thanks for getting this together!

So my question is this, what does this scan tool do that other generic tools cant?  Im thinking high-end Snap-On Solus/etc ones that display live data, clear codes, communicate with all the other CAN/OBDII modules.  Does it work on ALL make/models?  Pics of the hardware?

I thought this was going to be more tailored specifically for our Epics, its great to know that they can work on other vehicles but I would be inclined to try one of the cheapy $20 eBay specials and free software (used it before, I know its not polished and easy to use) first.  If that doesnt work, then if Im going to spend $650 on something so I can use it natively in Win 7 x64 (after Windows 8, 32-bit OSs/software wont be developed) why would I buy this vs spending $1000 on a scan tool that can do all this and more on all make/models?

Trying to play devils advocate here, for $200 its a no-brainer, but $650 makes me sit down and think hard about it.  Most people dont have Windows 7 Pro/Enterprise/Ultimate needed to use Windows XP Mode, you cant use it with Windows 7 Basic (netbooks) or Home Premium (most desktop/laptops).  If you dont have W7 Pro or higher, then thats another $100+ to upgrade your OS and all of a sudden this $200 adapter is $300.

ScarabEpic22- all great questions

Ive tried every code reader, scan tool, high end scanner (including solus and genesis) that i could get my hands on in the last 5 years---NONE work. Why you ask? They are all designed to work on OBD2 compliant vehicles. Our Epics are NOT OBD2 compliant. It's all about the software not the cable. The cable is simply the interface between a PC and vehicle. This software has different configurations. One works with OBD2 compliant vehicles and the other works on NON compliant.
As far as the generic feature it has worked on every OBD2 compliant vehicle I've ever plugged it into. I have to check for codes and monitor status on every used car I work on that my dealership sells and it has worked on all. Like I said before the data is limited in generic. That's because the software doesn't have the data bases need to go full dealer level. It reads and erases codes and monitors and has limited live data.

Yes, originally I was trying to tailor this to our boats but the cost quickly escalated over $1700 a unit and THAT manufacturer was inconsistent during our communications. I dropped it and them. None of us want to or will pay $1700 for that. This is simple and affordable and I think it works AWESOME. I personally use the Basic VIM and it does everything I want, especially for $200. As for the $650 Premium VIM that support newer Operating Systems, people asked for it and I wanted to give them an option. Yes, you're right "Windows XP Mode" will not work on Windows 7 Home. XP mode is a free pre-configured windows XP virtual machine. But for Windows 7 Home users there is "Windows Virtual PC" it is a virtualization program that allows you to create and run virtual machines on Windows 7 Home. Here is a blog link with info and links to downloads that explain the differences.

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2010/07/07/installing-windows-virtual-pc-on-windows-7-home-editions.aspx

I'm not a good Operating Systems PC guy. To be honest I downright stink at it. I rely on my PC guy to help me out. He explained this to me and I did not fully understand what he said. Sorry for the confusion on my end. I think this is a great workaround to let us run the Basic VIM. Worst case scenario, you have to upgrade your Operating System like you mentioned at a cost of "$100+." It still is less than half the cost of the Premium VIM.

I really just want an affordable tool so we can do real diagnostics on our boats and stop guessing or jumping to fixes for pattern failures that we think is the problem or close to something we read on the forum that may or may not be related to our individual issue. How cool would it be for someone to post "Hey I got code P1345 VVT sensor/cam postion sensor circuit malfunction (bank 1) and ask is that the cam sensor or VVT actuator?" We could do real diagnostics and not just say "Hey replace the spark plugs and pray." And yes sparkplugs do fix a lot of our problems but how long have you had 1 cylinder misfiring that you can't even feel on our boats, that's damaging the exhaust manifolds and we're clueless? Then all of a sudden we have 2, 3, or 4 misfiring and that's when we notice? We can see that in live data and prolong exhaust manifold replacement. We can also see a MAF sensors grams per second off because it's dirty and causing our fuel system to go rich and foul spark plugs and take out manifolds. It's just a vicious cycle. Our boats are getting to be 10+ years old and like the Lexus LS400's and GS400's at my dealership, we are going to start having real issues. Unfortanitly it's just a matter of time.

I think this tool could bring a whole new level of professionalism needed on our site. It would be cool to have a section just for diagnostics so any visitor doesn't just think these boats are loaded with issues. We own them because of the reliability not because were stuck with them.

I will be on vacation 1st through 5th of August so if you have any more questions I will answer them when I return.
Thanks

Doug, I appreciate your honest response, its always great to have someone passionate about these things!

I did not realize our boats arent OBD-II compliant, that makes this a LOT more challenging...

Good to know about the generic OBD-II scanning, my EFILive hardware can only do GM VPW and all CAN based vehicles, anything else I cant clear codes on/scan.

Yes, Virtual PC is an option, however it does not come with a Windows XP license.  So officially you'd have to buy another copy of XP (or Vista/W7) to use VPC (or like me have a few copies of XP/Vista lying around that arent used anymore).  But if you have to buy one, its another $60-150...again, just being devils advocate here.

I agree with this project wholeheartedly because our boats are getting up there in age, having an easier way to diagnose more severe engine problems can only help the community out.

Do you have more information about the VIM cables?  (Feel free to shoot me a PM if you'd rather do that.)  I like to know exactly what it looks like before I buy something.  A screenshot of the software showing the DTC page or Scan page would be great too! :D
