MAF is installed with the open end towards the flame arrestor. Look under 'MAF(Mass Airflow) Sensor Test(LS 400)' in the maintenance section for a diagram of the MAF. It even has an arrow to show the air which way it should go.

We put a timing belt in my x22 last weekend. Buddy put the sensor in backwards (duh). Short story is that it will start but will only run for a sec and die. You can imagine everything we were thinking following a timingbelt install. He had installed it where you could read the sticker but that was backwards.  Quick turnaround of the sensor and we were back in business.  Make sure the open end points away from the motor and towards the spark assessor as was previously mentions.
