prop pulling and spark plugs
« on: August 11, 2004, 16:15:08 pm »
I dinged a blade on my Cutter prop and need to remove it. Do I need to get a puller or can I just tap it off with a hammer?  I have a V-drive, is it LH rotation and 1 1/8 shaft always?  It is 4 blade, should I get a 3 blade for better holeshot?  Top speed is not important, I wakeboard @ 24-25 mph and no one skis on my boat.  Also I have been having to replace spark plugs every year, when it starts missing in August. I got a set of the #2 Densos last year and they went as far as the $12 Iridium ones did the year before, go figure.!!!

I need prop recommendations please!!

Derek, you have just been appointed Head Librarian of the Epic Archives. Or, Mr Manual Search Engine, however you want to look at it!

Wow, I did a search and did not find all that stuff.  Thanks.  What about the spark plug issue?  I have had good luck with the cheaper Densos for a year.  I just wish they would last longer like they are supposed to.  I always keep an extra set of them on board for just this very thing.

Keep in mind Toyota used two gear reductions on their v-drives.  The early s-22 used a 1.23:1 and the SX used a 1.45:1 though the drive itself will will be marked close to actual. Some SX boats had 1.23s by mistake so check under your back seat at the ratio on your Walters V-Drive unit itself.  Your shaft is definately 1 1/8 and is left hand rotation.  Don't even consider the three blade or a Cutter for that matter (I tried five different props one day from Cutter and all were new and all were bad unless your girlfriend or wife likes Harleys).  Acme or OJ.  Pitch is around 14X16 for the 1.46:1.  If you were satisfied with your old prop and are capable of 5800 at WOT duplicate it.  It's stamped on the back of the prop.

Mine is the last year they made them 2001? and I wonder if the cutter 4 blade on it is stock from the factory or an add on later?  The boat was used for Gravity Games tournament in late 2001 and then sold to me as a demo with 35 hours on it.  The pull is pretty good off the line but I have nothing to compare it with.  No trouble getting up with 2000 lbs total ballast[peeple and tanks and bags] I am not complaining.  I just wanted to see if I could improve it some and also have a spare on on board Just in case I ding it like I did last week.   I was able to straighten it out near perfect with a pair of pliers.

I believe your SX is a 2002 model (same as mine) given the colors and graphics.

You might want to check out the HIN decoder "how to" to make sure.

Not to offend anyone, but I so totally have wood right now! When I prepared to buy my boat last year, epicmarine wasn't around. Finding info on this boat was an amazingly unfruitful experience, but I proceeded.

To see what this site is becoming is such a joy. I remember so clearly how it felt to be in an information vacuum, and still read every single post that's written here. What's the opposite of taking something for granted? Cherish?

Thanks Pete, and thank all the rest of you too. Even as good as Pete is, if it weren't for all of us, the community, the site would be just a repository.

Props to y'all (ACME 3-blade, to be exact ;-)
