Engine misfiring running poor (fixed)
« on: August 10, 2004, 15:22:14 pm »
Just wanted to let everyone know that this weekend my boat started acting up again and was running poorly.  I previously had changed the fuel filter or dumped the fuel filter several times and the problem went away but this weekend it was doing the same thing.  Finally with the boat running at a constant 1300 rpm we started pulling the connectors one at a time off of the spark plug silinoids (can't remember the exact name).  What we were watching for was for the rpms to drop each time.  Well we finally found the cylinder that wasn't firing, replaced the spark plug and bammo, running like a charm again.  It had denso spark plugs which i though were supposed to last a very long time but my epic only has 190 hrs on it and it had a bad plug.  I replaced it with a Iridium NGK for 6.99 at O'Reily auto parts.

You might check the oil level on the dipstick, if it is near the top consider taking a little out.  Overfilling the oil just slightly caused me to have that same problem fouling the cylinder closest the front of the engine erratically for the past year.  I had only 150 hours when the problem started, nearly 40 hours past the last oil change.

Chico that is awesome observation, we need to start documenting this crap, we need an epic Database!

I'm gonna redesign the page anyway. It needs an update even if our Toyotas are stuck in a time warp!

I sucumbed to a "Toyota factory boat sale" in 2001.  Was impressed by the "Lexus" motor and three year warranty.  Imagine my displeasure when Anderson Moto Sports in Michigan fixed one factory defect and then told me not to bother to bring the boat back any more as they would not honor the warranty since Toyota Sports Marine were out of business.  The slick salesman sort of forgot to tell me the three year warranty was really a 30/30 Guarantee (30 feet or 30 seconds).  Anyhow, mine is missing, I found the cylinder but what to do about it?

Dang, Dawson, that sucks! Truth is, Toyota WILL honor the warrantee, you just have to make a stink. They will send a rep to you if your dealer will not live up to his obligations. Toyota pays retail rates to the dealer for labor, so unless they have no talent (probable) they will jump on your business.

That being said, there is probably nothing wrong with your boat that we can't help you fix, usually something simple. What is it that you say you are missing?

Welcome to the site, you bought a very unique boat that will make you happy.

I don't have any real experience with inboard dealerships, but did spend seven months at one of SoCal's biggest runabout dealers. Talk about high-pressure and 'get all you can get from a sale' sales efforts. Plus, we had any number of boats in for service that ended up staying for up to a year. Imagine letting your $100K cruiser stay parked in a dusty dealership back lot for a year. Boat dealerships (even the pseudo-franchises) are held to such a lower standard than car dealerships, and even those can piss you off, huh?

The thing that got me stoked about Toyota boats back in the day was the thought of towing your boat into the car dealership for service. My stoke had little to do with the brand, and more to do with the fact that a car dealership could not stand to screw over owners like boat and RV dealers can/do. Had Ford or Honda come out with a towboat, I'd have been in line for that too.

The two things that glare at me about how Toyota handled TMS was that although the boats were built very high-end, the organization's leaders were still taken directly from the domestic industry, and with them, all the in-the-box thinking. In other words, I don't think the boats were really built car-like enough. Well-funded, but from the wrong mindset to really bust a revolution. But that's the smaller of the two problems - the number one let down for me was that they contracted with regular boat dealerships. Although they were probably some of the best dealerships and were supported well in terms of training, etc., the fact remains that these channels were much less accountable than regular automobile dealerships might have been.

Your experience is pretty disgusting considering the fact that the dealerships have indeed been supported by the remnants of TMS, and will continue to be supported for some time. For them to just send you away at that time is simply a bunch of crap. They're in need of some concerted internet bashing if litigation doesn't suit you. I'm kinda surprised that Toyota doesn't throw some weight at them.

ANYWAY....welcome to the board, and please let us know all about your boat, experience, and impressions WITH PICTURES when you get a chance!!!
