switch panels dead
« on: June 19, 2022, 21:08:56 pm »
hey guys, looking for some ideas...seems both switch panels are dead.  i can't get lights, blower, bilge or horn to work...basically anything that there's a button for.  key position doesnt matter. plugged and unplugged them. don't see any issues with power or ground wires.  estop latch is OK.  something simple for me to do to verify that they're bad or ?  thx for any ideas.  boat is new to me and trying to track down these bugs.  having a blower and bilge too important right now to ignore. Thanks!!

Thanks Capt Rick - based on your experience does it sound like a panel issue, or have you seen other things lead to the same result?  Reason I bring that up is that while I've been prepping this boat the last few weeks, I was able to get the bilge/blower/lights able to work ONE time.  one time only out of maybe 200 times with the key off of the Off position.  And when it did work, all things were working.  I tried to wiggle a lot of wires and connections under the dash today meanwhile key in Acc and pushing the Bilge button.  Thanks for your insights....

1st turn off battery switch unplug orange wire at white plug 12 wire and 4 wire if connected.
2. turn on battery switch
3. press all the switchs on if the lights blink then it is best to replace it.

Capt Rick

send picture of the panel push buttons. and hull id number to Rick at boatetrade@aol.com

Hey Capt Rick.  Did as you say.  Unplugged 12-orange wire, white connector.  4-orange wire connector is unused.  I had NO blinking.  Boat starts and runs as it should, but no switch panel operation.  I also replaced the 4-switch, 6-switch and key switch with new.  Thoughts?  2001 S22

Install the connecter 12 wire.
Unplug at box #1 and #2 wire. See if all items work. if no and blinks need to replace box . if it works then move 1,2, to 10+ 12

I pulled 1 and 2 from the box, all else plugged in.  Power on.  switch panel buttons no function nor blinking; key at Acc or On doesnt matter.  What now?

I guess technically I haven't done 1a and 1b in the attached...cycling power with battery switch is about as close as I got there.

FYI you can also replace that with a touch screen system that has custom Epic programming. System has been in constant use for 3 years with no failures, easy drop-in replacement of existing system. Price starts at 475$

this also offers internet access and media player, options include soundcard and usb hub, remote access via celphone or tablet.

Thanks...I had seen that thread. The installation looks to be a lot more involved from the pics.

it takes an hour or two, mostly from finding the screws holding the kick panel down. I have not had any installation or startup issues with the panels I've sold so far, all have gone in without issues. I provide phone support.

The thing is about the original millennium button system, if you fix it, it will just fail again. I bought my original epic22 in 2000 brand new, had issues with the switch panel from day one. Same with my SX. If you load up the electrical system, the panels will go into blinky mode, may or may not come back. Eventually, inevitably, blinky is all you get.

Rick makes a hard switch panel replacement, definitely a good way to go, the reason I did not pursue a hard switch replacement is because you end up with a wad of switch wiring under the dash that is difficult to manage. I wanted programming flexibility for the button functions. We have programs for all of the Epic model button configs including heater, hatch and ballast controls. Ballast controls for SX allow you to fill or drain one tank, which you can't do with the stock setup. We recently added a cycling bilge control so you can leave your boat in water and bilge will run for 30 sec once an hour. Blower comes on automatically when you power up boat.

If you do a search you will see posts going back to 2002 when the forum was started (by me) about the blinky button issues. Luckily, you have options.
