Need new shaft after Broken Prop
« on: June 21, 2021, 18:55:07 pm »
@cyclone ;-)

We broke our prop on Lake Mead this weekend. First time for everything. At least we got one good day from our summer the previous day.

Now, the Shaft is broken (probably why it stopped going into gear).

We could use some advice. Also, anyone you recommend for servicing these type of issues and where to buy a shaft and necessary parts.

I'm new to actual problems. Maintenance hasn't been difficult.

Thanks for all your help!

Julie

you need a 1" SHAFT.

Order today from vintage parts or face obsolescence

Oof. I'd have someone check your transmission. Is the shaft itself broken, or is it the inboard coupler? Both ends of the shaft have keys that are supposed to shear if you hit something.  But what cyclone said, order one from vintage parts.

For service I'd try to find a marine shop that works on zf hurth transmissions, they can likely do the shaft, and check the tranny/alignment. I'd also recommend having your strut checked. The struts are also available off the vintage parts site but you'll have to press new bearings into it as only the 1 1/8" ones are left.

Hi Sammamish Skier,

Thank you for your guidance on this. We have been working with the repair shop to get this fixed.

It looks like the struct also needs to be replaced. I've been told they are unavailable,

If you happen to know, or anyone happens to know where to get one -- please let us know.

We are still praying to have our boat for a blip of the Summer.

Thank you again!

Julie

Check out vintage parts. They have the 1 1/8 strut. You can get new bearings installed to make it work with the 1" shaft. The 1" strut is no longer available.

If you need a shaft made my son can make it, he just made one for his bosses 27" Lyman inboard cabin cruiser. It was 1.25":))

I could have his shop quote you for it. I would not be surprised if one from a similar V drive would fit, a good prop guy could probably find one. That would be cheaper than having my son do it.

Get the strut immediately and then figure out what to do for the shaft.

The link from vintage parts no longer works.  Does anyone know another source for a drive shaft or strut?  I have to replace mine as well =(

What kind of bearings do I need to get the 1 1/8" strut to work with the 1" shaft?

You will need to get a machine shop to make you a custom cutlass bearing and press it into the strut.
