Trailer Tires
« on: May 28, 2005, 14:14:17 pm »
As our boat was being moved by the dealership that stores our boat for the winter a tire blew out on the single axle trailer.? Fortunately, the boat and trailer are fine, but I need a new tire.

There are two types of 225/75R15 trailer tires on TireRack.com:
- 50 PSI (for C Trailers)
- 65 PSI (for D Trailers)

Anybody know which tire we use for a single axle trailer?? I'd check myself, but the boat is still inaccessable.

Has anyone had to change a tire on their trailer?? Our boat did not come with a trailer jack, etc.? Any recommendations on what kind of jack to buy??

By the way, the blowout happened on I-94 in Downtown Milwaukee in a construction zone without shoulders.? The driver saw a cloud of smoke in the mirror and stopped.? Sounds like one of those nightmare instant traffic jams.? I can hear the airborne traffic report now... "I-94 is backed up because a jerk with a Toyota boat is changing a flat on the trailer... hey I didn't know Toyota makes boats!"

I'm glad it happened when they were towing it, instead of us!?

Ihad a blowout on my single axle a few weeks ago. THe valve stem blew out. The tires are still in great condition. I replaced both with chrome valve stems.

There is a little jack point just in front of the wheel that v's down on the outside of the frame. I used the factory jack from my 4runner and it worked just fine. It's th round jack the screws up. Even used the cheapo lug wrench.

I think I have the 65psi, but I'll check in a little while to verify. I think the weight factor is the important thing. I think mine at 2500 lbs per tire.

Guys, thanks for your help.

As I arrived at the tire store to get the tire repaired, the tire guy checked the other tires and the valve stem of one of the other tires came off in his hand!  I was less than a couple of miles from another blow out.  He couldn't believe that I made it to his store.  The valve stems were totally shot.

I asked about the chrome stems, but my tire guy advised against them.  He said that they are not built for the high pressure of these tires.  Lesman, do you want to double check this with your tire guy?  No big deal but all things being equal, I'd rather have chrome ones and not have to worry about dry rot, etc.

By the way, Tirerack.com is excellent with overnight service in the midwest at no extra charge.  This was great since our tire size was not stocked at the tire store.  In fact my tire guy says he uses Tirerack.com frequently for tires of unique size, like ours.

Also, the lug wrench that comes with the Honda Pilot will not work on our trailers.  You need a 13/16" lug wrench.

After my experience and reading about Lesman's, everyone should check their tire stems and make sure that your lug wrench fits your trailer!  This is an easy way to save yourself from a headache!

"chrome" valve stems are mearly rubber valve stems with a chrome cover over the top.  There are however all-metal valve stems that are superior in every way to chrome or rubber valve stems

I busted off a post last time I changed my right rear trailer tire.  I haven't worried much about replacing it, and when I had my trailer overhauled (brakes, etc.) they said they didn't have any posts that size.  Is this something I should worry about replacing quickly, or is it OK without one nut and post?

Dude,

I couldn't survive even a day without my nut and post. Good luck.

At first I asked for Chrome valve stems and not realizing what I was asking for, they gave me the chrome caps on the new rubber stems. Well, that seems pointless for anytihng other than looks. The rubber pressure point still was exposed and I could see it dryrottin again. So, he said, oh, you want metal valve stems. They had to order them from another Firestone store. THey were real nice about it and I think it was like $10-12 per tire

So now I have metal valve stems.

Ill ask the tire guy, but I think he was talking about just the Chrome cap, which makes sense why you would not want to use those since the rubber is exposed.

Oh, and I'm grabbin my "nuts" as I write this "post"

ok Nut Freaks, you probably wouldn't know a post if you saw one.  I'll look elsewhere for advice, where's Derek or someone else smart?

I guess this makes Festivus the Post'er child; that is if he's found his post yet. I've got a magnifying glass that may be helpful in this situation.

I would call Ameritrail and tell them that you just busted a nut on your trailer.

They should have the stud in stock and be able to send him over.
