wake shape & size for slalom & wakeboarding ?
« on: September 19, 2005, 02:09:10 am »
I'm fairly new to this & have heard epics are very good. What model should I aim for for both waterski slalom & wakeboarding ? I know a direct drive & not a vee drive but what other specs / models ?

does anyone have pics of the 26-36mph slalom wakes and then loaded, the 20-23mph wakeboarding wakes ?

thanks in advance

If you lean more towards slalom and don't need as much space (way more than a closed bow nautique or mabilu) then I would say an Epic 21 closed bow. If you like to wakeboard more or have 2 or more kids, I would say an Epic 22. Both will have similar loaded boarding wakes, but the Epic 21 has a better ski wake, it was AWSA approved. The Epic 21 is loads of fun to drive!! (thanks Wreck!!)

Pay close attention to Cyclone's comments. He is spot on as to the size differences of the boats. The 22s are simply cavernous, compared to the 21, in passenger and storage capacity. I was very hesitant going into the Epic 21 due to the limitations of a closed bow. I rationalized it but then I excel at this particular skill. I am very happy with my choice but understand that the limitations are real. Since we are not purists, we tube and ski off the tower if the parents or other kids just have to go along for the ride. That still maxes out at 6 in the boat with one behind it. The 22s appear to hold about 112.

My 11 yr old daughter has eased up to 33 mph when she slaloms, having started at 28mph. The wake seems to be simply disappearing as we go faster. I would love her to see Breakawaydaze work behind the boat so she could step up her skills to the next level. hint, hint

My son has always been happy with the wakeboard wake but then he is so laid back I could never be sure. However, we had several adult friends wakeboard and they loved it. Once, I loaded the boats with some living fat sacks (my sister, her husband and daughter and ME) and my son said it made a HUGE difference. Real fat sacks properly distributed may be just the ticket-

As to being fun to drive, I think it is like a sports car. However, I had no comparisons, not having driven many others. Having Cyclone say it was fun to drive is all the confirmation I need. His sons and I also had a ball. I now know why the fancy grab handles are strategically placed on the sides!!!

You have to decide how much room you need in a boat but at least you have decided on a Toyota. There are some of each for sale right now. Capt. Rick has a drop-dead gorgeous 22 and there is a dirt cheap 21 on eBay right now.

Let?s see, is there anyone else I need to suck up to---hmmm, Toyotafreak caught me before I could edit my other post but is too far away to physically harm me. The Tabernacle Twins have great posts but were too wimpy to drive just a few thousand miles for the first annual East Coast Epic Roundup---nope, that should do it.

Wreck, you are killing me.  I purposely live 550 miles from my evil epic-twin so as to not draw "tabernacle twin" comments.
I don't want anything to do with Bitzco's lewd remarks and hair-brain ideas.  I have enough of my own.
I agree with your wake comments.  The wake my S22 or Bitz's SX throws is ideal.  Compared to my cousin eddie's pro-bass wake and my uncle jimmy-dean's bayliner wake, it is AWESOME!!

OMG, Festivus, you are absolutely correct. (How's that fer sucking up). I owe each of you individual insults if I choose to honor you with a mention in my posts. Geez, how inconsiderate....JUST KIDDING!!

The last time I made my kids suffer  the indignation of skiing/wakeboarding (yeah, I make them do it at the same time - after all, they are just kids) behind the pontoon, we had a ball even if the wake wasn't perfect. Well, at least the 17 people on board were having a ball. It took almost 3.5 miles to realize the kids had fallen - they were a little chapped.
