S-22 porpoising
« on: November 12, 2005, 14:25:21 pm »
Why do the some v-drives, with no weight at higher speeds porpoise?.
Is there away to add weight to the front to solve the problem, or
should trim tabs work for us?

Derek (ToyotaFreak) will chime in here, but he found that he needs about 200lbs up front in his boat to keep it from porpoising. He has an s22. Trim tabs would work too, but it's easier to get some lead or Pop Products bags and throw them under the seats and leave them there. My Epic 22 has a fixed trim plate on the transom, I've been told that my boat will porpoise without it. I haven't tried removing it, I'm kinda interested because it might sink the back of the boat more, more wake. I run gobs of weight anyway, so a minor trim issue when unweighted doesn't concern me much.

The only things I'd like to add to the original thread...

 http://www.cyclone-cj.com/forum4/index.php?topic=83.0

...is that I weight more than 150 pounds now. That was before I gave up te Marlboros.

Even 100 pounds under farthest forward bow cushion helps the problem when empty, but with a bigger crew, you need a litl more up there. The bags are cool because I can move them aft when trailering.

I still think trim tabs would be cool for side-to-side trim and even to help the boat plane when heavily weighted (over 2K). As for me, though, there are a dozen things I'd rather do to my boat than that.

I keep 150lbs of cold iron under the front bow cushions all summer.  It adds a little to the already heavy tongue weight, but doesn't noticeably affect towing.   My gut only gets bigger, but my super-freaky wife doesn't weigh much, so it all evens out.

I don't have any weight installed up front n my SX and the only time I have any porpoising is if there are only a couple of people in the boat and both people are in the back. More people in back with no one in front equals no porpoising. However, with that configuration the wake is messy and its a long run to plane out. I'm gonna add some weight up there next year.
