XM Radio
« on: March 24, 2003, 01:09:32 am »
I finished installing XM radio on my boat, the Kenwood CD player and changer both skip too much and I can't get any radio stations on the lake anyway. I have the little Sony modular unit and mounted the antenna WAY up in the bow in front of the bow eye inside the hull. Works like a champ, pics coming.

I used an aftermarket RF modulator to bring the XM in on 87.5 FM. Not ideal for sound quality, but 40$ instead of a new receiver. I have to draw the cost line somewhere! Antenna has remained in place and works perfectly unless my son is sitting directly above it (bow) with his fishing pole.

I bought a second XM receiver on Ebay for 80$, I have them everywhere. Still not as cool as college radio, but there are 100+ stations with no commercials on the good ones. On one Deep Rock channel, they are doing an A-Z. It has been 3 weeks and they are up to S. Kind of cool if you are sick of top 40. It doesn't skip on double ups either, even when my riding partner broke his leg in 3 places hitting a double up yesterday. :(

It wasn't that bad a wreck, I have definitely busted my ass way harder on a ski. Wakeboarding is actually much safer than skiing, as long as you take it easy. My pal had consumed most of a 12 pack and decided to charge it after we had all quit for the day. A mans got to know his limitations.

how did you mount the xm antenna under the bow.  I have sirius on my x-22 and put the antenna on the flat surface in front of the dash.  seems to cut out sometimes because of the proximity of the tower.  I was thinking about moving it to the flat area on top of the tower under the snap on cover.

best ski/wakeboard runs ever:

full moon, midnight, weeknight on the toyota.  nothing like it!

I put it under the bow all the way up front, removed the front seat, there is an access hole. I stuck it up there with some of that industrial velcro from Radio shack. No holes and it is not visible. Works like a champ because that area is almost never obscured unless someone is sitting on the bow on top of the lift eye. Fiberglass doesn't attenuate the signal.
