Ever wonder what's beneath the floor in the S22
« on: April 06, 2006, 15:40:05 pm »
I did lol, so I thought I would ask the designer.

Hi Dave,

I was wondering if you could tell me what is located in the S22 were the SX22 has the built in ballast tanks.  Are the tanks in the S22 and they just aren't tapped?  I was also wondering what is beneath the floor in the bow of the boat.  Is there room to cut a hatch and put in a internal ballast up there?

Thanks,

Brent Baker

I think the earliest S22's had nothing in there but air, as it is not necessary to foam places like that on a 22' boat. I have some recollection that later boats were foamed 'just for the heck of it'. There shouldn't be tanks in a plain S22 'untapped' as you say, that would have been a colossal waste of money in a time when Toyota was needing to economize, and I never heard of such a practice.

They did a lot of things out there in Groveland that weren't by the book, but that would be a pretty big stretch.
There's not going to be too much room forward, but you could probably get a few hundred pounds total with a conformal bag, maybe 40-50 gallons depending on what bulkheads are in there, if they put any. The boat was designed with two longitudinal stringer type bulkheads in the bow floor vertical wall well area.

Need to get a 6" hole saw from Lowes, a large spoon, a small file & measuring tape, and a fairy.

Send him down there to clear the foam, clean up all the rough edges, and then measure for two custom sacks.

I think in one of the threads by the PacNorWest crew there was talk of a fairy. Perhaps they would lend you one. I think they were riding it pretty hard though. It might be worn out.

Check out http://www.epicmarine.com/images/Ballast__Tower_OM.pdf

When you pull the floor panels up, you'll see where the two stringers run lengthwise through the boat on either side of the gas tank, engine and tranny. Outboard these stringers are where the wet floor tanks are at.
