Ballast won't fill...
« on: July 31, 2006, 02:51:35 am »
Have an Epic 21 and the ballast won't fill. It is a single bag in the back of the boat in the storage compartment. The switch broke a prong so I replaced it and I found the 30 amp fuse had blown under the floor with the battery. It will empty and I tested/found the pump for that under the floor in the back under the back seat, but is there a second one to fill it and where is it? I need to check that, because I have a feeling that pump seized, overloaded the circuit and blew the fuse. Any input would be helpful. Thank you much!

See the maintenance page, there are diagrams of the ballast system there. There were a lot of changes in three years, dealer installed mods, etc.

I went through the Maint. Topics and didn't find anything that matched up to my model. It's a '99 Epic 21, single ballast in rear with a single rocker switch above the throttle arm. By examining the ballast, drain & fill hoses it doesn't look like a reverse-polarity type pump, so I'm assuming there is a 2nd one somewhere. If you know where it's at or at least a general vicinity, I can look for it with out tearing apart half the boat. Thanks for any input, I appreciate it.

Unless I am way off base, the E21's didn't come with factory ballast as an option. Your set up was probably installed by a previous owner and is most likely a "one of a kind".
Don't be so humble, you're not that great.

I find that if I throw a box of twinkies and a cheesecake into the boat, my ballast gets right in. It fills up fast that way.

I have an '01 E21 and it doesn't have factory ballast either. I believe in the literature it says it wasn't an option as well, so that makes sense. I agree with Wreck- probably aftermarket and you'll most likely have to dig / follow the hoses.

Good luck!

Heres my 2 cents into your troubles:  I had the same thing happen- with my x22 (wouldn't work)  I had the Waterpuppy pump-  The two wires that power the darn thing get to hot and fused together which shorted it out... I haven't replaced my yet, however- you can find them on ebay for like 100 bucks.  Trace the wires comming from the pump and see if they are  still two seperate wires.  Just my thoughts
Boating is more then a passion- is a lifestyle.

Like everybody else has said, you are probably going to have to find it on your own.  As for two pumps or one, here is some info that might help.

Impeller pumps will run in either direction by just swithching the wires.  If you have one switch that has three positions (fill, empty, off) you may only have one pump.  The switch reverses the polarity for you.  The same pump fills and emptys the sack through the same hose.

As for hidding places for pumps I had one between the side of the boat and the fuel tank.  You can access this through the rear trunk.  There are two carpet covered marine boards that are held in place by two thumb screws.  The main thing behind these boads is the gas tank, but you might find a pump tucked in on either side.  BTW- this is also where the blower is located.
I am broke.
