My boat has a huge dead spot. Please HELP
« on: June 03, 2006, 18:24:57 pm »
I have got problems with my epic it lags of the start, it takes about 2-3 min to get it on step. It will run finefrom 32mph-45mph, anything under it just sucks. It was running fine last weak  before I fuel up at ESSO but sucks now. I havedrained the fuel tank (thinking it's bad fuel),changed the fuel filter, put injector cleaner into the fuel and ran for 40min at about 40mph. I think it runs worse now than before i drained the tank. I NEED help one person thought it might be the oxygen sensor.
I originally thought I had water in the fuel, when I drained the tank I think it might be diesel/ gas mix from the gas station I filled up at. I am out of ideas, it feels like I am running with about 90hp. Please help me get my powerfull direct drive back!   ???

I hope you didn't get diesel in there, maybe you are talking about 2 cycle oil/gas mixture?

If that happened I would bet that you fouled plugs.

Resetting the computer may help, but if the plugs are bad it is going to behave the same anyway.

Get the plugs out, pry open the wallet and swap em, worst case is that you eliminate plugs as the issue and you have a set of spares.

Unfortunately looking at the plugs won't tell you the whole story.  A plug can be bad and look fine.

My s22 was sluggish at low rpm's and I changed the plugs, used them for 6 seasons.  I was immediate. Ran like new.  Looking at the old plugs, I couldn't tell if any of them were bad.

I changed the plugs no difference. I am beginning to hate my life. They say if I didn't have any bad luck I wouldn't have any at all. I am beginning to believe this. Tomarrow I got a mechanic to hook up a computer and run the codes. I need to know if the set up is the same a a car or are the marine engines set up different. And f so how do i find out what they are to be set-up procedure should be?

Sounds similar to the symptoms I had. Have you checked under the dash to make sure all the ignition wires are connected at the key switch?

If no dash warning light goes on there will be no OBD2 codes so dont waste time with computer.

Maybe fuel pump, so get vise grips and pinch fuel return line. Test boat if it operates then the lower fuel pump is not working.

The mechanic put the computer to it and the computer wouldn't recognize the Lexus 4.0L. We did a fuel pressure test and there is no pressure what so ever, not even enough to show up on the pressure gauge. When we pushed in the pressure valve the fuel only trickle out. So I believe that I am going to have to change the fuel filter on the drivers side below all the exhaust. After that I am going to change the fuel Pump. If any one has any tricks to doing either one of these jobs it would sure make my night go faster tomarrow.

I had another mechanic check the contaminated fuel (that I believe caused the problems) and he also said it is about 50/50 gas/diesel. So my problem has to be fuel related. Two days til Saturday. So I better go and try to fix this boat.

Lets make your comment clear is there diesel fuel in the tank> if not
Turn key on, press the red button on engine,  hit each fuel pump. unplug one fuel pump to determine which one is working. The screw on the rail will raise if you have fuel pressure.

If you have diesel in the tank. Email me toyotav8bt@aol.com
