did i fry my impeller??
« on: June 06, 2008, 03:36:15 am »
I just got the boat in the water for the first time.  i ran it for a couple min and noticed that it was running hot.  found out that the strainer was not on tight enough and letting air and and not getting water to the impeller.  brand new this year.  running in a couple min with no water is it toast?   it ran fine after that with no overheating  what are your thoughts

You can lay awake at night wondering and sweat it out every time you go out or, pain in the ass that it is, you can crack open that pump and put your fears to rest. I like to sleep at night myself. ;D

I like tryme's post.  I would open it up and check it.  If it is nice and smooth, it is probably good, but you also have to look at the memory of it as it may have heated a memory into it and may not pump like it is supposed to.  They are about $35 on the internet.  I have a spare in the boat so I can change it out in a pinch with out wasting a day on the lake. I would order a spare and leave it in there if it seems to be doing good (and looks good), just keep an eye on it as it is the main artery to the heart.

Same thing happened to me a couple years ago. Good thing i was only ideling the motor in the marina when mine started to run hot. Good thing the store had one on hand for me as well.
It was actually my own fault because i forgot i needed to prime the strainer when i got done cleaning it. Duh!

Lessons learned, i will always have a spare on hand from now on.
