Just a wild guess, but it sounds like the ignition switch is toast. that could explain why it just shuts off, as well as why the starter stays engaged. There is a spring in the ignition that makes it go from "starter engaged" to "on"

Mine recently busted where you could turn the key 360 degrees and while trying to get off the lake if the key was not in the correct postion, the starter would engage, or it would cut off.

You can get an new ingition switch off this site.

After you disconnected the battery, then reconnected, it started right up and stayed running and everything seemed OK?

It took a few cranks but it stayed running as we idled back to the dock.  We didn't want to risk a long paddle back to the dock.

I had the same issue a week ago but not as severe as you. My boat had idled for 3 hours due to one of my buddies neglect. The next day the boat did as you described. I turned off the battery disconnect switch for about 5 minuets to allow the engine ECM to go back to factory settings. It is an adaptive ECM. After that the boat preformed as if it never happened.

Well,  that sounds easy enough.  We will try it tomorrow morning.  I will report back with how it goes.

Thanks

On Friday we took it out.  It started and ran fine after we reconnected the battery.  It then started to overheat.  Luckily we had a second boat out and were able to tow it back to the dock.  We are going to inspect the impeller and go from there.  I will let you know if we find any more electrical issues after we get the overheating thing solved.

Thanks
Kent
