Replace impeller?
« on: March 30, 2004, 01:42:03 am »
My '99 x22 has never had the impeller replaced.  It only has 130 hours on it, but I saw the maintenance guide recommended replacing them every 2 years.  Should I go ahead and replace it.  I saw the how-to article and it looks fairly simple.  If so, where is the best place to order them online.  Thanks.

Kyle, the one and only Toyota dealer I've been to said that the impeller should be changed every single year. They clearly CAN last longer, but his opinion was that it's cheap insurance to keep it really fresh.

Thanks.  I ordered one from skidim.com.  Better safe than sorry.

I replaced my impeller last night.  The original one was definitely in bad shape (several fins were split).  I wanted to complement the instructions given on this site.  It made the job go very smoothly.

What's an impeller?

Which one should I buy for my Epic 22?

How much do they cost?

Just look at the how to article and its pretty self explanatory.  The impeller keeps water circulating to cool your engine.  Like gr8dna said, replacing the impeller is cheap insurance to keep your engine from overheating.  They run about $35.  You need the Johnson 812.  It took me about an hour to change.

I RECENTLY REPLACED MY IMPELLER BECAUSE THE TEMP STARTED TO SPIKE AT IDLE OR LOW RPM. THE TEMP WOULD RETURN TO NORMAL WITHIN SECONDS AT SLOW CRUISE. WHEN I TOOK OUT THE OLD ONE IT WAS HARDLY RECOGNIZABLE. THERE WERE ONLY SEVEN GEAR TEETH LEFT.  EACH HAD ABOUT 3/4 OF THEIR ORIGINAL LENGTH.
MY BOAT IS A 99 WITH 254 HRS. REPLACE IT EVERY YEAR.
