replacing bearing questions/also brakes
« on: August 11, 2008, 21:58:12 pm »
I have a 99 epic 21 with a single axle trailer.  must be me but i seem to always have bearing issues.   getting way to hot.  i had mine redone and repacked 2 years ago at toms trailers and i religiously put 3 pumps in every time it hits water.  but i get really hot bearings.  i am going to check the brakes also but my question is i see the maint guide for the trailer repacking and the part numbers but i don't know the axle diameter.  and i also cannot find 2 - Spindo Spring Seals - 233-168-SP2-1
2 - Spindo Spring Seals - 58846C.  also has anyone used redtrailers.com.  i guess i need to know what i need to purchase to replace it all but the hubs.  any help would be great.  i want to redo them this weekend so i need to get the parts on order.  thanks a ton

On the bearing replacement pdf, it references Henderson's as a place to get the parts.

After years of overheating, I believe my problem was sticking calipers.  Since I've replaced them, I have less overheating.

Good luck!

try a c-clamp, but if it seized up. it will likely have to be replaced. If you can retract it with the c-clamp without tremendous effort, it may  be OK...test if it works by jacking up the wheel, wheel should spin relatively freely with no brake pressure applied once you used the c-clamp to retract it.... with the wheel jacked up, Have a buddy stick a screwdriver under the trailer tongue to manually pump the master cyl.. brake pads should engage and you won;t be able to turn the wheel..if not- replace caliper.. Then release the pressure with the tab under the trailer tongue to disengage the brakes. wheel should be able to turn. If the caliper is seizing, it will be difficult or impossible to turn the wheel with your hand. This is not foolproof, and the safest thing to do is to replace the caliper.

There are pictures of this in the brake bleeding procedure in the maintenance doc., which you mine as well do if your messing with it anyway.
