Bilge Pump not Auto Any More
« on: August 12, 2009, 00:24:47 am »
I had the boat out this weekend and everything ran great, finally.  The only issue I had was the bilge pump was either on or off via the dash button.  I could have swore the bilge had an "auto" cycle.  Any idea where my "auto" cycle could have gone?

Not entirely sure about this on the stock pumps, but I think they have a float in them to trigger the pump to start pumping when there is water in the bilge. Maybe the float is stuck in the "on" position?

yes, there is a float that engages the pump in the auto position. Mines never stuck, but it's a good idea to pull it off and clean the screen under it every so often as well. THe auto mode i believe is indicated with a red light on the dash switch, but it is difficult to see unless you get right in there and block the sunlight with your hand

funny you should say. we were out on sunday and took on ALOT of water. turns out SOMEONE hit the shower button while driving, filling the bilge  >:( . the water was over the battery and coming through the floors of the boat. bilge wasnt working do to ALOT of muck in the screen. i thought the boat felt a lil heavy. one thing i over looked but i wont anymore. and yes id say the ball might be stuck. also sometimes when we hit a wave hard somethings come unplugged at the rocker switches so id check that too.

The float could very well be stuck.  I hadn't used the boat in a while, so when I first hit the bilge button nothing happened.  I pulled the pump and got it spinning and worked fine, except for auto.  Going to give the pump a good cleaning and see if that helps, if not, just gotta make sure I turn it off when the bilge is empty.

The 500gph Rule bilge pump in both of my boats has been a non float type. I believe it cycles every two minutes or so and pumps til there's no water left. On the pump, there are three wires, a brown (on all the time) a brown with black stripe (cycle) and a black (ground) THe brown lead was not used on my millenium dash boats, kind of redundant. I don't know how it works, but it pumps when there's water and stops when it's gone.

There was nothing to hooking up the new one but splicing two wires and hooking up the hose, clip it into the original holder if it's not broken.

I have been working the hell out of mine lately, till I found my leak. I had the shower pump off but the panel knobs were wide open and it was seeping:0 ::)

I'm sold on Rule pumps, they are cheap as sheaot and they work for a long time.
