transmission knock on a V Drive SX
« on: June 14, 2011, 16:24:35 pm »
Hi Folks,  I seam to have a knock when i put the boat in gear. It os at the same frequency as the propeller shaft spins and it goes away as soon as I throttle up.

It did not do this before I winterized it and now it does right after i put it back in the water?

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Joel

Does the prop turn when the boat is in neutral?

when I first got my boat, all the flange bolts that attach the output of the V-drive to the prop shaft were loose, my boat would make a strange noise when I engaged or disengaged the prop..... I would start there if you havent already checked.

I don't think its the transmission.  I had the exact same problem, replaced the plugs and it went away.  Always start at the plugs!  One fowled plug and I thought the transmission was gonna fall out!  With the engine running in gear on lake at idle, unscrew each coil pack and lift them off the plugs one at a time, when there is no difference in idle, you have found the culprit.  Replace that plug and your done!  Or...skip the whole experiment and just replace them all, knock gone and enjoy the day!  Keep us posted!

It turned out to be normal!  At idle but in gear the backlash can occur.  This makes a noise!  Any gas at all and it goes away.

Good news!

Thanks for all the feedback!
