Acme prop pitch
« on: March 20, 2010, 01:31:03 am »
I am in ogden utah. what prop pitch do I need for an acme 3 or 4 blade.  Direct drive x22. Any help appreciated.  What is a good brand also, and what will it do to the boat?  Are they better then the stainless, I hear they are, but why?

Um not sure what you mean by "good brand", an Acme prop is made by and only by Acme... I installed mine last August, and it made a HUGE difference.  Much better holeshot, midrange acceleration is much stronger, and gas consumption increased by a negligible (at least to me) amount.  I havent found a downside to it yet, although I will admit I have maybe 15hrs on it so far.  At slalom speeds, the 541 (and 540) prop was turning about the same as the original OJ prop, ~4000rpms.  Takes less throttle to come out of the hole and the boat is much more responsive.  Reminds me of how my TrailBlazer felt after I tuned the PCM, shifted better, felt lighter on its toes.  The Epic felt the same way.

To to Acme's website and read about how they machine their propellers, they are not welded at all but rather CNC machined from a solid block of material (brass I believe).  This translates to repeatable results and almost identical propellers churned out every time.  Plus, the 3 blade Acme prop I bought has about the same surface area of a normal 4 blade.  Its the best of both worlds, holeshot of a 4 blade and I didnt lose any top end (in fact I actually blasted through the 6000rpm limiter and had to back off, top speed was very similar to before).

If your boat has not been modified to reverse to the right like mine (so it backs to the left), then you should look at the Acme 540 and 542 props.  I went with the 541 because mine is the opposite rotation and I didnt feel I should go for the 543.  Looking back, if I had the time I might have tried the 543 first and then the 541 via Acme's 30 day exchange policy, but I wanted to get it done and I only have a few days with the boat a year anyway.

I live in Springville, UT and have the following prop on my SX  - Acme 449 Prop Pitch: 13X12.5 LH.

I'm happy with it and consulted with Acme when I purchased it.  You can call them and talk about how your boat is performing and what change you would like to see.

The 3 blade Acme 449 is a great all-around prop for our elevation.

Depends if you want to wakebaord with ballast, slalom ski etc....

I got a prop I could use with up to 3000# ballast and it turned the boat into a whole new machine. 13x11.5 3 blade .080 cup i believe.  You can search the site for "Love my acme prop" for all the numbers and more reviews. Bottom line, call acme and tell them what you want to use your boat for and how and they will tell you which prop is best for you.

Toyota should have sold their boats with these props on them.  It is soo much better with the correct prop.

After blindside and brad posted, I should clarify I use my E22 as an all-around machine without any ballast.  A prop like the 449 will be better for an SX (different transmission ratio I believe too) as it is heavier and has integrated ballast.

I looked and narrowed it down to the 540/541 or 542/543, if you plan on using your boat mostly for wakeboarding loaded with ballast then they would be a solid choice but there is probably a better prop Acme makes that would be even better.  Give them a ring, support was super helpful when I called them and they will walk you through what you need.

Dry weight of boat 2500lbs I have about 125 lbs of gear on the boat.

Plus fuel & Crew etc

Acme 524. Loved the power and slalom pull up very easy. Held speed etc. Did not like fuel economy at higher speeds.

Acme 1598 750 crew weight. Fuel economy good. Hole shot for slalom was just OK. To a long time to get up to slalom speed. Bare foot pull up acceptable

Acme 480B Fuel economy OK but the boat could hardly pull me out of the water. Other skiers complained about the hole shot also.

OJ 13x13 1 RH OEM prop. Acceptable slalom pull up and hole shot. Leaves a little to be desired on barefoot start.

Acme 540 is my pick of Acme props for our 1999 Epic21. The pull up on slalom was very good with a crew weight of 550lbs and tank of fuel. The bare footer I pulled said the hole shot was excellent and it came up to speed quickly. At trick ski speed it holds the speed excellent even with a lot of weight in the boat. It also holds the speed well at wakeboard speed with 600 lbs in the back. You will burn slightly more gas with this prop as opposed to the OJ prop that was OEM on the boat.

ScarabEpic22,

you mentioned you changed the rotation of your prop.. how did you do that?  I would love to change mine for a better surf wake!  I have heard you could change it but wasn't sure if it was true.  That would be awesome!!

I actually just had the selling dealer (Ski Masters Watersports) change it for me.  My dad wanted it done because after using our friends 97 MC and 98 Nautique, the MC is much easier to dock by yourself with a LH rotation prop (so it backs to the right) than the Nautique with the RH prop (backs left).  Forces you to think about which boat you're in!  Also, when you pull up on a downed skiier/boarder, we always put them on the drivers side so as the driver you can always see them in the water.  With the LH prop, hit reverse and the boat comes right to the downed skiier/boarder making it easier for them to get on the platform.

But Im pretty sure its just the cable swap.  Essentially its like running the transmission is reverse all the time (theoretically speaking, shouldnt actually matter which way as both the forward and reverse gears are the same).  Wonder if this is why I always have to push the throttle back to make it crank, hmmm going to investigate that issue in a month or so when it comes out of storage.  And new CD player goes in too...

thanks for the info.   I currently run a 3 blade and I like that my SX backs to the right and I like the wake for wakeboarding.  The problem is getting the wake right for surfing.  If it is a simple switch of the cable and a new prop, I could have the best of both worlds.  It seems these days I enjoy surfing and not dislocating joints and breaking bones wakeboarding...  I will look into it and see if it works.

What I don't get is the noise my SX makes in reverse...  seems like it would make this noise all the time running it in reverse?  I'm sure the noise is normal..  any thoughts?

Ah I see why you want to swap rotations, for me it doesnt matter as I dont surf.  Maybe if I get some ballast (someday) Ill get into it, but with a DD the wake will never be as big.

If you like the wake while surfing with a RH prop (backs left) then boarding should be good too (hopefully).  If its not, guess swapping props and rotations could be done for a weekend albeit with a lot of work.

Glad to see you're still on the forum.

Thanks for posting the propellers performance for your boat.  A friend bought an E21 last July, so I know he'll find it useful.

A good Acme prop is still the best upgrade for these boats. If you still run a factory prop, do  yourself a big favor and get a properly sized prop. Next best upgrade is perfect pass :)
