Trailer - Brake Actuator
« on: July 19, 2004, 23:18:49 pm »
Recently the grease on my trailer wheels started spraying out of the bearing housing - hubs.  Initially I thought I may be towing with my trailer tongue too low - thus engaging the braking system too often and heating up the bearings.  I raised the ball-hitch to no avail.

I called my dealer (Marine Products - Salt Lake City) since my wheel hubs were sizzling on my way back from Bear Lake with the scouts.  Not a good situation in the middle of Wyoming!

We checked to make sure the brake actuator lock-out was not engaged - this is a metal button on the bottom side of the actuator.  I pushed the lock-out lever with ease, thus the actuator was not in lock-out mode.   We concluded that the hydraulic brake actuator had gone bad (it moved forward and back with little pressure or weight).  Apparently this is something they have noted several times this year.

I bled the braking system, re-lubed the bearings and drove the rest of the way home - the hubs stayed cool but I also had not brakes on the trailer!  It is also amazing the difference in acceleration and performance of my vehicle without the trailer brakes engaged continually.

Today the trailer is being serviced.  Hopefully no further damage to the bearings or axles.

Word to the wise - when you hubs get super hot - check to make sure the brake actuator is working correctly.

PS - I also reviewed the trailer maintenance pdf on Pete's How To documents.

It was helpful to note that we should be adding 3 pumps of grease to the bearings after each use to clear out the water!

I'm assuming this is from a small grease gun with 1" cartridges and not the large grease gun with 2" cartridges.

This may be overkill but when you've seen the grease drip out of the hubs like water like I have - I'm motivated to be a little extra cautious.

My fake Bearing Buddie copies leak grease like crazy. I'm going to put real ones on there and see if they do any better.

I keep having to clean my rims from grease also.  Must be a curse of the bearing setup.  I keep wondering if the bearing buddies are bad.

Picked up the boat and trailer from the dealer.

They confirmed the brake actuator was bad and replaced it.  They also found the rear wheel brake pads were worn out and had damaged the rotors - this happens when the actuator fails and the brakes are continually engaged.  New hubs, rotors, brake pads and bearings were installed.

Just spent the last few days at Flaming Gorge (NE corner of Utah).  About a 200 mile drive to get there.  The hubs got a little warm.  We may not have solved the problem totally.  I'll monitor it and post any new developments.

Had a good time on the lake.  The boat ran great as usual!
