Bilge pump cleaning.
« on: August 04, 2004, 18:04:10 pm »
I have read other threads about cleaning the intake and hose to the bilge pump(s). Anybody have a picture or directions on finding this so I can clean. I just looked at my battery and there appears to be about an inch or more of water in the forward area. I turn on bilge and can hear it running but no water is exiting.

Thanks, Jeff

Jeff, mine is a v-drive, but...

The boat's got to be on a real slope, like on the launch ramp, for water to exit the garboard drain (in the transom). Since you don't usually pull the plug till it's up in the cleanup area, there's always a bit of water still in there. In other words, when the trailer's parked on level ground, water collects in the bilge next to the driver's feet. I've gotten in the habit up bringing the wet/dry vac in and sucking the water out of there before wrapping her up. A little water does collect in between the liner and hull, too so it's good to let the vac suck for a minute or so.

I thought about installing a dripless packing, but that wouldn't help so much: our ice chest drains into the bilge.

As far as the pump goes: it might not be able to suck all the water, but if you see it try, and if it ejects even a little spurt, it's probably good to go. You could try bilge cleaner, but it seems to be overkill to me.

Oh yeah, almost forgot: the steering cable is run under the fuel tank (at least in the v-drives), and when I took my tank out, there was a collection of debris which was helping to trap water in there - made it even harder for water to drain out the back. You d-drive guys are in a little different boat (   ;D  ) cuz you have a drain plug right under the engine too, right?

Derek-

You are correct.  There are two drain plugs in the DD's: One at the back like your v-drive, and the other directly under the front of the engine(they even mention running the oil pan drain hose out through there instead of using a vacuum pump on it when changing the oil.

the bilge pump snaps into a holder screwed to the bottom of the boat. If it doesn't work after cleaning but you still hear it running, there is a good chance it was wired backwards from the factory. Mine was. I replace the pump and wired it correctly, dry bilge.

Our pump was wired backwards too.

Pete-

What pump did you replace yours with?  The base of ours is all cracked and twisted, and the tabs that the pump snap into are broken, so when I turn it on, the pressure pushes the pump off the base and it doesn't work without holding it down.   Was the discharge hose diameter the same or did you have to do some mods.?

It was a stock Rule 500 gph automatic bilge pump (no external switch) A new one comes with a new mounting piece, it'll take you 20 minutes to replace. I bought mine off the shelf at West Marine. You have to pull the battery and floor panel.

Thanks, Pete.  Our Epic has a rule as well.  I'll have to pick one up at West Marine as you suggested.  Glad it is available, and is a simple swap-out.

Our boats use stock parts, top of the line. Most are easily available. Exhaust manifolds and computers scared me, but not anymore. Crazy Aussies figgered all that crap out. God bless em... They stuck with us, and I would personally like to thank them. Thanks.
