Bilge filled with water
« on: July 17, 2015, 16:34:12 pm »
S22 V-Drive - so the bilge filled with water yesterday. I thought it was the plug just not being screwed in tightly. That was not it. I got it on the trailer and found a gurgling noise on the starboard side of the engine. There was a strangely shaped petcock sort of thing that is screwed (attached) right onto the engine block. It has one entry hose (about 1/2 inch diameter hose maybe) then just below it on the same piece of metal is "T" where the "T" end is open and water was dripping (spewing) out fairly quickly.
What is this thing? Does it need to be capped? Why did it happen yesterday and not before?

Any other ideas as to why the bilge has water in it?

I checked every hose on the water intake system form the intake on the hull, through the sea strainer, trans, impeller, all the way to the thermostat and they are all tight and dry...

FYI -We ran it this weekend for hours without any issues.

This sounds like the block drain. The hose that goes into it is from the oil cooler, the other outlet is for draining the engine for winterization. I'd need a picture to be 100% sure. You can also look at the winterization guide, I think it has a picture of the block drains.

Based on what you are saying, it sounds like the bolt you remove to drain the block has unscrewed and come out.  If it's unscrewed a bit, just tighten it up.  If it did fall out, it's likely laying in your bilge somewhere. If you can't find it laying in the bilge, you may have to build a new assembly as this part is no longer available. You local auto parts store likely has a bunch of brass fittings you can adapt to make things work.

Thanks for chiming in to help, I do appreciate it..

Just to be sure...I know it is not the manifold block drain. That one is on the port side of the V-drive engine and that one is tight.

I am looking at the pdf for winterization (direct drive since it has a better picture) and on page 6 it has a picture where the arrow is pointing to "Block Fitting" (looks like it is a stainless steel "long" nut with a 14mm nut on the end). This is where the water is coming out, only from a little "T" right under the oil cooler hose...

the little "T" where the water is coming out is not threaded...not on the inside nor the outside...

I have these crude drawings because this part is so far under there and hidden that I can't even get my camera to where I can get good pictures of it..

Based on your drawings, that's definitely the block drain. Looks like it's leaking out of the drain outlet that you'd use for draining for winterizing. I'd recommend backing the petcock out completely, then putting it back in. The T fitting on the petcock on yours looks aftermarket, mine just has a nut on the end, and based on the parts diagrams, is the way they come from toyota.

What will that do to back it out the entire thing and put it back in?

Won't that opening still be open and won't water leak out?

I am thinking now that some sort of "cap" fell off .....

That should be closed up as far as I can figure...maybe there was some short hose with a clamp on the end that was attached to it at one point and the pressure popped it off?

I found what this thing is...It is 12 and 13 on the diagram here http://www.epicmarine.com/figures/e_Fig_3.php

also I am adding the diagram.....So is the second little nipple thing supposed to be attached to a hose?? or capped off?

That is my problem is that water is coming out of the second nipple. The first one is where the hose is already attached (transmission hose I believe)

HELP!!!

In the parts diagram #12 is the portion that screws into the block, and #13 is the portion of the drain you unscrew to drain the block. The second nipple is to attach a hose to drain the block. It was likely used in the 1uzfe motor in cars, which uses most of the same parts. I don't think any one uses them in the boats as, unless you have closed cooling, as you are just draining lake water into the bilge when you winterize.

Based on what you drew earlier, your #13 has a t handle on it. If #13 is backed out, water from the block/lake will drain into the bilge, you should be able to screw it back in and solve your issue, though as I said earlier, I,d unscrew it all the way and make sure it's not damaged, then screw it back in.

Thanks again for your update I really appreciate it !!!

So I was thinking maybe to attach a little hose (1/4 I think) to that second nipple that is exposed and close the hose off with a clamp or something...That way I know the hole is closed. I will also unscrew that thing, check it and screw it back in.

Anything that pops into your heads about this let me know!!

when you screw in the 10mm fitting it blocks off the little 1/4" nipple that the water is coming out of. I think I would pull the whole assembly off the block o
and check it out. it may be corroded and leaking or just not tight. it could be replaced with a metric pipe plug.

A little water in Bilge
« Reply #8 on: July 26, 2015, 15:05:34 pm »
Awesome Cyclone! I did what you suggested, thank you!!

I removed the petcock and I found it was a little loose, just enough for the end of the petcock to not seal correctly. I looked to make sure everything was clean and it was. Then I re-installed it giving it a extra turn to tighten it up. I also capped off the little water exit hole, problem solved....
