X22 ballast question
« on: April 28, 2005, 05:47:47 am »
I went to replace the bilge pump for the ballast system intake.  When I put the new bilge pump on (identical to the stock Rule 1100), as soon as I open the valve, it leaks like crazy at the intake side of the pump.   I'm guessing there was a rubber gasket in there that somehow fell out when I changed pumps without me realizing it.

I guarantee this is not Toyota specific, and it may be the same on an SX.  Anybody know if there is a gasket, and if so, what it looks like or who might know?

You got you wunna them leaks, Cal. Don't change it out in the water, the Skeeter will be on the bottom with them lunker bass real quick. Them pump fittin's, they're tapered thread, which means that the more you turn the pump around and around, (lefty loosy, righty tighty) the tighter it seals. You can snap that stalk off in the hole if you tighten it too much. Bad luck that. Use summa that there Teflon tape on them threads first, it'll fit up in there REAL NIIIICE. HELLLL YEAHHH  Dale Earnhardt.

Actually, I don't think that's quite where my leak is.  When you install the bilge pump, you attatch it with four small screws to a white cylinder, which is then attatched to the intake piping.  Where the water is leaking from is between the bilge pump body and the white cylindrical (there, I said it again) four-screw attatchment.

Does that make sense?  If not, I'll try and take a pic tonight.  But I got me a date, so we'll see if there's time!!

Yep, there are four screws that attach the pump to the bottom part with the tapered fitting on it. They should have a blue mark on each one, if not, use a drop of blue loctite on each one. That was a Rule recall on the 1100 pumps. Tighten them in a star pattern, not too tight. Methinks you applied too much torque and distorted the plastic. Snug them up but don't ream on them. Tighten them equally. Loctite will keep them from backing out. There should be an o-ring inbetween. Make sure that you don't have the OLD o-ring on one part and the NEW o-ring on the old part, fer sher leak.

Hook it up to a bucket of water and a car battery to make sure it doesn't leak before you put it in. It is better to replace the whole pump as an assembly with the bottom fitting if you can.

YOUUU can DOOOO IIIIT Cal!!

Hey Cal
Don't tell her about your leaky white cylinder, it's a real mood killer.

Bounce...

Capt. Rick -- do you have? a part number for the Rule pump that was used as the intake pump for the X22 ballast system??? I've searched long and hard, and am guessing it's the Rule 205FAA Anti-airlock LW-seacock fitting.? But this seems to be a very hard-to-find part, and has to be custom ordered.? So... can anybody confirm that's what I need?

Finding a replacement o-ring has not gone well.? None seem to work (I got smart and tested with a bucket this time, thanks for the tip, Pete).

Thanks, y'all.

p.s. date went extremely well, so have the few more that have followed.? Maybe I should change my screen name to SLAYER or something like that... ;)?

You know I'm going to continue with this one when one of the first things she asked me is, "so, have you ever tried wakeboarding?"?  Seriously.  About crapped my pants.
