100 octane fuel
« on: July 30, 2005, 01:21:33 am »
I was on the way to the lake today with my Tige friend and his boat, we stopped at a local gas station for fuel, and they had 100 octane racing fuel, right out of the pump.  It is $5/gallon.  I know that there is a thread where you brainiacs discuss the octane rating, but I sort of got lost in the technical print.  I am thinking about letting my fuel run down, then run a tank of this good stuff through it.

If it is 100 low lead, the lead may screw up some of the engine sensors. I'd stick to Chevron 93 myself.

Here's what you do; put it in John's Tige first, see what happens and then decide. I'm just jealous. No boarding for me. Another family reunion and my shoulder is still tweaked from the waverunner jump at Powell. Ouch!

Hmmm? Very interesting,? we go from people who want to see how cheap of gas they can get away with to someone who really wants to step up to the plate.
? ? ? ?Festivus you must have some serious bank roll!!! Here is my 2 cents.

? ?THE GOOD - Ohh good lord your going to love your boat!!! ;D The ecm for the engine will love doing all sorts of new calculations and pushing power limits to all new levels. It will have as big of smile as you. ;D your horsepower and torque levels should definitly improve and be noticeable.

? ?THE BAD - $5 a gallon. The hour it MAY take the ecm to adjust to the new octane. AND last but not least HAVING TO GO BACK TO 93!!!! :'(

? ? Had a friend at the dealership who has a supercharged Tundra who ran 103 octane for a trip. It was unbelievable. it took alittle while to adjust to the new octane but once it did it was the $hit!!!

? ? Oh yeah lead can only damage O2 sensors (oxygen) and we dont have those on our boats.

I think I'll try it.  Maybe after I drain my tank to replace that danggedd tracking fin.  I'll report back on the results, but it won't be anytime soon.  As far as the bank roll goes, my friend, it's more about priorities.  I don't have a single blind or curtain in my house, my vacuum cleaner don't work, my grass is dying, and my kids don't get any allowance.  $5 per gallon gas is no problem.

Thanks Wakejunky. That makes sense, I've heard that before about the 02 sensors but couldn't remember if that applied to us. I may give it a go, they sell some blue 108 octane leaded racing gas at Lanier Speedway (hell yeah!) which is near where I put in......Even with that stuff I'll still save on gas compared to a new Xstar!

so I put $150 (just under 30 gallons)of 100 octane in this morning.  My tank was completely emtpy following the removal and install of the tracking fin.   I wasn't sure how easily it would start after having the fuel lines unplugged and dangling loose, but it was like nothing, turned right over and fired up just like normal.  And as far as the effect of that octane level on the boat...

she's butter.

I am wondering if the engine computers reset when I turn my battery switch to off anyways, because it didn't take long at all to notice a difference.  I can get my rpm's about 400 higher (now up to 5500ish), the speed is better, the engine is quieter, and I love it.  I figure I'll start charging my passengers for each boarding set to compensate for the difference in gas price.  I wish I could always run that shizzle through the tank.

I may keep the octane at 100 for a while, just cuz....

At the rate it is going, 93 octance will cost more than $5/gallon by Labor Day. I may put some of that cheap 100 octance in myself!
Don't be so humble, you're not that great.

All i need is a 1,000 gallon tank in my back yard and 50 bottles of Stabil and I'm set. I'm thinking I set up a paypal account and sell gas futures.

if you have a big improvement with the 100 octane (i run the fancy high tech optimax 98 octane no lead here in aus..   we are lucky to have it but it costs) does that mean that the epic motors have knock sensors??? or is the benfit just a better burn characteristic and higher octane number...
