Best way to clean carpet and vinyl?
« on: July 20, 2003, 15:52:52 pm »
First, the carpet: how best to give it 'regular' cleanings (manual says detergent/water and a thorough rinse.) Also, has anyone successfully 'conditioned' it to get it soft and supple again? Does your carpet give off the fuzzies, and if so, how best to help set them free?

Second, the vinyl: at the boat place, the guys used to use Simple Green a lot. It works great but I heard it kill the stitching. Manual says detergent/water and maybe a soft-bristled brush. Must need a brush, cuz the grime starts to accumulate in the texture of the vinyl. Heard that Aerospace 303 is a good protectant.

Any comments on either subject would be appreciated.

a diluted dish detergent mixture is good for regular vinyl cleanings and use spray 9 or simple green for the tough spots.

As for the carpets, they will shed for quite some time, its normal (be sure to clean out your bilge pump & bilge pump hose form time to time as the fibers collect there and can eventually lead to hose blockage, USUALLY at a bad time like during heavy rain) I never really found an ideal cleaning solution but I vacuumed mine after every use with a heavy duty wet / dry vac and it stayed pretty decent.

I use my home carpet cleaning machine, if I pull the clamshell and the back seat I can get to 80% of the carpet, I use the hand tool for the rest. The carpet comes back amazingly well, it still looks new and I've got 3.5 yrs and 450 hours on it. I have used liquid hand cleaner on dirty parts of the upholstery, other than that, soap and water.
