What does a TMS/Ameritrail trailer cost?
« on: June 20, 2005, 05:06:11 am »

Bought the boat used for $27K. DMV wanted to know how much of that was boat and how much was trailer. Don't remember what I told them cuz that was two years ago and the dog ate my paperwork.

Now the tax man wants to know what each are worth and I'm not sure what to say.

Seems like a nice trailer with four disks might go for like $3K, but that's just a guess. Anybody got a little more definitive estimate?

Registered my boat this year and DMV valued the trailer at 1K. Not much, but that meant I had to pay less in tax so I was all for it.

I actually don't like the trailer.  I crushed my driver's side fender about 2 years ago and had to have the trailer stretched on a tractor trailer repair platform.  My master cylinder just went out, so I drove about 500 miles this weekend without any brakes.  Good thing there are 4 of those discs, huh?  I also had a post bust off when changing a tire.  I have called Ameritrailer for parts and haven't had that great of success.  I'm spewing negativism about my rig! Doesn't happen often.  I'd trade mine for a pair of rollerskates (not in-line, but the old 4-corner ones) and a good tow rope.

I hear ya!!For such a nice boat, these trailors are crap.I'd consider buying a trailor from malibu if I knew it fit my boat.I pulled Gerry Nunn's boat to the launch for him at a clinic last summer because he just had the RV.I couldn't even tell I was pulling anything!!
Toyotafreak,I agree with the cheaper figure for the trailor.I'm not sure how much less you would have to pay,but why give the tax nazi more than you have to?

I guess I was thinking a higher trailer cost would reduce my luxury (boat) tax. DMV's pretty easy, but I've no idea what the tax man has to say.

I would like to resurrect this thread, not only to prove that I did a search before asking, but also because I need to approach it from a slightly different angle.

I gave my insurance company the price I paid for the boat and when I got the policy (finally) they assigned a value of $1,300 to the trailer. The issue here is that this is the max they will pay in the event of a total loss (theft comes to mind). This is a single axle trailer. Does this sound right to you guys? Can I replace the TMS trailer for this amount. Whether I would want to seems to be in debate-
Don't be so humble, you're not that great.
