SX - h20 in the oil

Has anyone seen the Epic that Executive Boats & Yachts has for sale (i think it's in Utah)?
I noticed the price just dropped a lot .... down to $20,000.  I figured it was too good to be true, for a 2002 Epic SX.  Sure enough, they added a little something to the last line of their description:

4.0L, VT 300i V-drive, aprx 359.6 hours; 2-axle trailer w/surge brakes, side guides & spare tire; AM/FM CD stereo (no face plate); speed/tach/volt meters; tilt steering wheel; cockpit carpet; walk-thru windshield; wakeboard tower; wakeboard rack; tournament ski pylon; hot/cold transom shower; fiberglass swim platform; (2) ballast tanks. Bank Repo! Engine has water in the oil.


Is this a major problem or something that can be fixed for a reasonable amount (couple thousand)?   OR, is this something I should stay away from (....engine replacement?))..

That's funny, Brad and I were looking at that boat. It had not been winterized, and the freeze plugs had popped out. So, we lowballed them, feeling that it was pretty certain that the engine was toast. Water in the oil means that they put the freeze plugs in since we talked and the engine is in fact, toast. A new engine is 16K from Toyota, last time I checked.

If I could get that thing REALLY cheap, I'd put a different engine in it, maybe a 4.7 out of a tundra or something. Or a crate Hemi;) If I had the time and a place to work on it, I really don't.

You could get an engine from a wrecked Lexus and probably swap the marine specific parts from it. Rebuilt car 1UZFE's go for around 5k. I don't know what the issues might be, if there is anything significantly different from the marine and car versions of that engine. I don't think there is...much.

Capt. Rick, this could be a weekend project that you could turn a few bucks on. I don't think anyone is going to touch this one with a ten foot pole. Who knows what else is wrong with it, it is an abused repo. But, there is an ass for every seat!

My recommendation would be to buy Terry's boat, it is clean and it's history is documented. It needs a good home.

With water in the oil you have blown headgaskets, oil cooler defective, or a cracked block. Considering the freeze plugs popped out I'd say the block. FYI an engine, trans, vdrive assembly from the factory is about $6500 plus freight. Considering that's all new and direct from Toyota that ain't bad. I had gotten a quote from I believe Atlanta and the freight to CA was $400. You also might add into that-do you have the equipment to swap it out and probably more important do you have the balls to swap it out.

although if you do the math I'm still not sure its worth it.

My .02 cents I paid $30K for my SX clean as a whistle and ready to go with 124 hours. Unless it's the only SX on the market I wouldn't do it. Like cyclone said Terry's boat is looking REAL good.

Last summer, Skipper Buds would install a fully dressed Lexus/Hurth engine/tranny combo for $6,900 in a direct drive boat.

It IS an '02, that's something to consider. That's not a bad price on the engine, very cheap in fact.

It's a lot less than competing boats where the cost is $10k+.  Obviously, you'd want to price this in your area to make sure you could get a deal like this.

Call Jeremy at Marine Products in Salt Lake and see what he'd charge you to look at the boat and give you an estimate for repaires.
