So just two new wires should fix the problem?  New power from the battery to the DECC and a better ground wire...seems easy enough...too bad I don't know what the hell I'm doing. :)

That will fix it. I have to do it to my new boat too! I use that opportunity to put a pair of terminal strips under the dash for powering accessories.
