X22 Ballast stock replacement
« on: February 12, 2007, 05:34:50 am »
My stock ballast is on it's last...has about 6 bike-tube patches on it right now because I fill it to the max and keep the pumps running (every little bit of weight helps, right?).  Is there a replacement out there that will fit the fill and drain locations on an X22?  Or does somebody know of somebody who will build quality one at a good price?  My boat is on its third stock ballast sack -- there has to be a better one out there somewhere.

I've searched archives but much x22 ballast info seems outdated, so I thought I'd just get a new thread going.

Thanks

I don't have the "stock" ballast, but I have used several sacks back there with no problems. I have a Skylon locker sack, it lays flatter, more like the original sack. It holds about 500 lbs, but I over inflate the crap out of it. I regularly inflate it to the point where it's pushing on the lid. If it popped, I'd put in a Skylon 750, no cover needed. My Locker sack cover ripped years ago, it's never leaked or had to  be patched.

If fou have some vdrive stubby sacks I'd be really interested, if Cal doesn't want 'em.

Cal, you should look at the hard tanks that came in the '02 Epic 22/X22. They had them in the parts list a while back. Then, you could have gauges, hard storage on top.

MPL0011869Tank,Hard,WaterBallastSystem,31Gal,02E21,E22,X22

There's two of these I think, I don't know if there is a left and right. You'd have to pull your back seat and gas tank most likely to put them in.

They are 151$ ea.

Anybody have experience with these?

http://www.overtons.com/modperl/overtons/detail/pdetail2.cgi?r=detail_view&item_num=11449

Stock size is: 56x12x21"
This bag is: 62x12x26"

I measured and I think there is room. This material is similar to the stuff used on river rafts. My main concern is that the drain valve is off to one side, rather than in the middle like the stock ballast is set-up.  I think that could be fixed easily with some longer tubing.  My second concern is that these valves may not be compatible with stock.

Once you decide and get'r installed/tested, let me know how it worked out for you.  I may attempt to upgrade the ol' ballast in my X22 if yours turns out awesome.  Thanks.

I would not even hesitate to upgrade. You can put fittings anywhere you want in a sack, there are posts here showing how to do it. Or, call Fly High and get them to make a custom sack for you. It doesn't cost that much more. PRO X all the way, they rock.

I would not buy a 533 dollar sack from Toyota, or even one for half that. You  can get a custom one made any shape you want with fittings wherever you want for less than 200$
