Timing belt replacement info needed
« on: July 12, 2008, 06:21:00 am »
Coming up on the 10th year with the Epic, and i'd like to know just how important is it i change the timing belt?

I have 290 easy hrs on it, and take good care of it as well. It has the original drive belt w/ no cracks.

If i do need to change it, what else should be done?

Is it the same belt as the Lexus GS 400 ?

I notice i can buy it here for like $59 or so. I'd imagine it's cheaper here than at the dealer?

Anybody's experiences with this would be helpful, thanks.

I would recommend you pull the right timing belt cam cover cap and visually inspect the belt. If you break a belt it will bend the valves. While the right cap is not hard to remove, replacing the timing belt is not for beginners on the 1uzfe. If i was going to change the timing belt i would also replace the water pump (engine pump not fresh water pump) and the front crank seal.

10 years......damn ;D

Only Toyota, you're talking about the serp belt, not the timing belt.  The timing belt is what wakejunky's talking about and is very involved to do.  The serp belt you need a 3/8 ratchet and about 5min.  Put the ratchet in the tensioner and turn until the belt can be removed.

On most Toyotas, a timing belt failure will stop the engine from running (of course), but causes no engine damage. Is it different on the Lexus engine? Any Toyota tech can change the belt. I would hesitate to do it by myself. One of my dealers has a 99 like mine, and one of his techs is going to do ours next year.

Yes, the engines are different.

All 4 cyl engines with timing belts are non-interferance
V6 engines that have a timing belt BUT are not 3.3 liter vvti engines are non-interferance
V6 3.0 liter vvti engine is non-interferance
All 3.3 liter vvti engines are INTERFERANCE
All V8 engines are INTERFERANCE
All straight 6 engines are INTERFERANCE
Trust me our engine is INTERFERANCE

Our timing belt replacement procedure is identical to the 4.7 liter Tundra engine.

Yes the belt is the same as the GS 400. I think I paid about $40 for the Gatorback  serpantine belt. I'd change it, low cost now, easy to install, peace of mind, priceless.

Wavejunky,

Do you know if the timing belt, water pump and front crank seal are the same as 4.7 tundra, or lexus 400?.  Although I am sure Capt Rick can get us the proper parts, if I cannot get them at the dealership.

Thanks, will do and have the parts ready when I have one of our master tech's do the job.  Although the tech I have in mind is not exited about access to the timing belt.

timing belt isnt hard to replace at all. the cam gears can be locked together with a simple little bolt. i just put brand new heads and all new belts on friends 99 epic 21. water pump locked up and threw the belt so it overheated and skipped teeth on timing belt causing it to bend every valve in heads. took me about 3 hours to get back together. runs like a champ with over 400 hours. 80 hours since the rebuild.

What do you think the boat dealer will charge to replace a timing belt?

I had a independent auto shop do mine a year ago, They had done lots of LS 400 timing belts so I had complete faith that they could do an Epic 21. They replaced the time belt, water pump, tensioner and idlers. Total $900.00. A little pricey but it was done right.
