Ok my buddy is an independent mechanic and I was talking to him about doing the timing belt on the boat in the spring. He has done many 4.0L Lexus cars.  His basic response was "while we are in there we may as well do it right and make sure we aren't back in there anytime soon"

For those of you Toy/Lex techs out there do I have anything missing here?

Timing Belt       (13568-09070)
Timing Belt Tensioner Bearing   (13505-0F010)
Timing Belt Idler Bearing   (13503-0F010)
Hydraulic Tensioner  (13540-50030)
Water Pump   (16100-59275-83)
2 Camshaft Seals   (90311-71001)
Crankshaft Seal   (90311-A0001)
Serpentine Drive Belt   (90916-02586)

Also - should I go OEM or aftermarket - or some of each.

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks,
Craig

totally agree do it right, do it once. this may just be because I'm a Lexus whore but i only use factory parts. had too many problems with aftermarket. only part i think is overkill is the hydraulic tensioner but if it makes you feel better its your money. Only things your missing is two o-rings. 96761-35035 and 96761-24019. there for the water intake housing and a pipe that connects to the back of the water pump. if you have never changed the thermostat id recommend that also. Can ONLY get the correct part from TMS parts its a 160 degree thermostat, do not run the 180. TMS has it for about $24 u can get one from TRD but its over $80.

Eagle1,

What shop are you taking yours to?  I've asked Skipper Buds to work up a quote during this winter.  I am tempted to call Safro to  get a quote from them, as well.  I'd be interested in knowing about your tech, too.

If you do the work yourself, I hope you document and post "how to" guide.  This could be some really good stuff for everyone later.  Good luck, and I think OEM is probably a good choice.

I plan on taking it to M&L automotive in Waterford, WI - he does a ton of work on NSX's - and has one himself and I guess those are way more of a challenge than our setup - he will pretty much work on anything but super-exotics but since he is independent he typically only sees cars out of warranty

lakeside - email or PM me your quotes when you get them - I am going to see what kind of prices I can get on OEM parts - going to try online and the M&L relationship with the local Toyota/Lexus dealers - I would be curious to know if skipper buds  has done one yet - I like them a lot for other ToyBoat specific things but being a Marine dealer it is not like he tears apart a lexus motor very often - maybe trying Lexus of brookfield would do it but I am sure it would be $$$

anyone know of good online OEM parts distributors?  I got some good prices from http://mylexusparts.com/index.html

I will let the Toy/Lex techs take this further but it seems the general concern is all stuff wears out eventually and replacing these items while you are in there "resets" the clock - the majority of this particular job is labor and if you have to go back in there to replace a $50 tensioner you are looking at doing a majority of that labor all over again

Are you doing all this as a result of engine hours, age or do you have engine issues?
How many hours on your engine?
Thanks

I have a decent number of hours on the boat 800+ and I have a 99 so it is really the first two.

The thing still runs like a top - I almost don't want to mess with it but the idea of a $75 belt ruining a very expensive engine tells me to just do it.  Heck - I've never even put plugs in - the coils still have the factory enamel on them because they have never had a socket on them.

I sold my E22 at 838 hrs ( I think?) and moved up to an SX at 235 hrs. It's a good time to buy, and an Epic is not a hard boat to sell if you price it correctly.  I'll replace my timing belt at 1k hrs. I'll probably do it myself because I'm the handy type and have worked on lots of engines and machinery. I'd take it to Tony at Atlanta Marine if I was going to have someone do it.

Actually the tensioner is the only part you can replace in about 5 minutes as long as the belt is ok.  The rest are inside the timing covers.  I am a Lexus Master Tech in the Rockford area, and our dealer in rockford getes $450 labor to replace those belts.  Many of the guys will do them on the side for $200 or so.

he just needs a service manual. cause there is no seals to replace. if you push in on the tensioner and it pushes back out, its fine. and i just charged my friend pizza and beer.  ::)
